Make it your New Year’s Resolution to write for us in 2019.

You probably already have several great column ideas rattling around in your head. Right now they’re just passionate thoughts or well-marinated pet peeves. Turn those ideas into columns that will help other tech decision makers and write for MyTechDecisions.

We certainly take pride in our approach to journalism – our coverage of impressive technology projects, our resources for helping you create better RFPs (and better ROI), our perspective on where technology is heading and our focus on evolving our content for today’s digital audience.

An important complement to that is providing a platform for our audience, the folks who live breathe the challenges related to choosing technology solutions for an organization.

You care about what you do. Who better than you to present an idea, issue a challenge or pick a bone with the tech decision-making community?

Since we launched TD, we sought to be a voice for the folks who are in the trenches, choosing technology solutions for their organizations and taking responsibility for the return on investment. If you write for TD, you can amplify your own voice.

Some of my favorite MyTechdecisions articles have been written by tech decision makers like you.

Examples of Topics to Be Tackled by Tech Decision Maker Community:

  • What keeps you up at night? What do you see as the biggest potential threats to an organization’s network and how can folks in the tech decision making community mitigate those concerns?
  • How has the role of an IT professional changed during your career? Maybe you’re now charged with creating access control or unified communication and collaboration (UC&C) solutions for your organization. And how have you adjusted?
  • How do you truly educate and get employees to take ownership of their role in the organization’s cybersecurity?
  • What are your methods for choosing which vendors (AV, electrical, office design, communications, etc.) to work with? And yes, we’d welcome an opportunity to learn from your mistakes, as well.
  • The video display industry is big on specs – HDR, 4K, 8K, you name it. What specs are actually important to you and your organization when rolling out video solutions?

These are just a few topic examples. We’re actually more interested in the ones that, as mentioned, are likely rattling around in your head.

How to Write for MyTechDecisions

You don’t have to be an executive, CIO, CTO or IT director (but you can be). You don’t have to be great writer (we are a team of editors). You just need passion for what you do.

If you’re interested in writing a column for MyTechDecisions, here’s how it works:

  • Send an email to zachary.comeau@emeraldx.com; or web editor Alyssa Borelli at alyssa.borelli@emeraldx.com.
  • We’ll kick around your ideas and discuss how to optimize them for our audience.
  • We’ll give some direction, including a suggested word count and deadline.
  • You’ll pour your thoughts into a column.
  • Our team will edit as needed and help to position it for maximum impact.
  • We’ll run significant changes by you to make sure you’re comfortable with your by-lined column before it gets posted.
  • We’ll share it and promote it to TD

Are you ready to take a thought-leadership role in the tech decision-making community? If so, we’d love to hear from you — and so would MyTechDecisions’ audience.

CISOs are starting to express dwindling confidence in protecting all attack vectors, according to research by Check Point.

Check Point’s global survey of CISOs indicated “CISOs’ confidence in security goes down as the number of cyber attacks, assets to secure, and the number of vendors’ solutions used in their environment increases.”

At least 92% of survey respondents indicated that growing IT complexity (i.e. remote work) is making security more challenging. Attack surfaces have expanded as organizations adopt public cloud computing and SaaS applications. Ransomware shows no signs of slowing down with threat actors only getting more creative and more sophisticated when it comes to new types of cloud attacks.

Listen to My TechDecisions Podcast Episode 138: The Growing Threat of Ransomware

Adding to the dwindling confidence, security teams are frequently understaffed and overwhelmed trying to meet business needs while protecting their organization against attacks.

Almost all survey respondents (99%) use solutions from multiple security vendors and agree managing them is challenging, making securing their organization more complex. Managing and integrating multiple solutions from different vendors takes time, resources, training, operation overhead, and increased budget – all things most security teams are in short supply of.

Approaches to today’s security challenges:

According to Check Point, here are some approaches to today’s security challenges:

A Consolidated Architecture: A unified architecture will reduce operational overhead and more easily allow organizations to address security challenges.

Prevention Technology: Relying on detection-only technology and human remediation can be disastrous; organizations should adopt an active threat prevention approach to block attacks before they cause damage to the system.

Automation & Planning: Security protections need to work at machine speed to stop malware that operates in milliseconds. Automating processes creates efficiencies and improves security team effectiveness.

Visibility & Control: For security teams to react in real-time to prevent cyberattacks and minimize the damage to their organization, a single view of the entire environment is needed to improve visibility and control. A centrally managed security infrastructure eliminates visibility silos and helps improve defenses, according to Check Point.

Agility & Enablement: Dev-opps teams oftentimes will release solutions without proper security rather than waiting.  Security teams need to operate at the same speed and effectiveness as other parts of the organization and serve as a business enabler.

Organizations must be agile and protect all IT assets and the data stored within them. A holistic cyber security strategy that addresses today’s cyber security challenges by eliminating complexities and inefficiencies, sealing security gaps, and protecting organizations from both known and unknown threats is recommended.

At least ten U.S. hospitals could soon be the targets of Russian cyber attacks.

A Russian-based ransomware group, which goes by the name UNC1878 or Wizard Spider, has already attacked nine hospitals in three weeks, reports Insurance Journal.

So far, hospitals in New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Massachusetts, Texas and Arkansas have been the victims.

The attacks on hospitals are increasing the workload of healthcare workers who are already struggling with their workloads due to the current spike in coronavirus infections and fatalities.

Clinicians at one of the hospitals that was on the receiving end of a ransomware attack are struggling to track patient medications and other information on paper, reports Insurance Journal.

According to cyber-security firm Prevailion Inc., UNC1878 is now laying the groundwork for more attacks. The firm has been investigating the group since late October:

While our investigation is still underway, we have so far identified hundreds of organizations worldwide that show compromise activity by this threat actor, and which may be in the early- to mid-stages of a Ryuk ransomware attack.

As of November 3rd, there are approximately 1,400 organizations that show beacon activity to the UNC1878 C2 domains, with a total of 340 organizations that are showing a substantial amount of this beaconing, indicating a proliferating infection and likely stage advancement.

This threat actor poses a considerable risk to any organization that is impacted, but it is especially worrisome for the healthcare industry.

Prevailion’s warning comes a week after U.S. federal authorities warned healthcare facilities of an “Increased and Imminent” ransomware threat.

The joint warning from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, FBI and Department of Health and Human Services said malicious cyber actors are targeting the healthcare sector with Trickbot malware, leading to ransomware attacks, data theft and the disruption of critical healthcare services.

However, according to Prevaillion, these cybercriminals are now switching from Trickbot to the malware KEGTAP/BEERBOT and SINGLEMALT/STILLBOT (also known as: BazarLoader and BazarBackdoor).

Additionally, Russian hackers are stepping up their attacks against the overall U.S. server infrastructure during today’s elections, according to NordVPN.

Researchers commissioned by the firm have observed a 98% increase overnight in brute-force attacks against U.S. servers, reports TechRadar.
