Apple Now Fine with Independent Shops Repairing iPhones https://mytechdecisions.com/mobility/apple-now-fine-with-independent-shops-repairing-iphones/ https://mytechdecisions.com/mobility/apple-now-fine-with-independent-shops-repairing-iphones/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2019 14:00:04 +0000 https://mytechdecisions.com/?p=18777 While the company has vehemently opposed the Right to Repair movement, Apple has now reversed its stance and will allow independent shops to repair products.

The post Apple Now Fine with Independent Shops Repairing iPhones appeared first on My TechDecisions.

]]>
The Right to Repair movement has had its sights set on smartphones, specifically those from Apple, for some time now. In the case of Apple, the company only allowed Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) to repair their iPhones. To date, only Apple chose who could become an AASP, which meant Apple controlled the market on who could repair their products, and for how much. In fact, Apple has previously fought the California right-to-repair bill that would force manufacturers to provide repair info on products.

That all changes after a recent press release from Apple announced a surprising new program that will allow any business to receive the training to become an AASP. The new independent repair provider program will allow organizations large or small to receive training, become certified, and receive the same genuine parts, tools, repair manuals and diagnostics that are available to AASPs today.

There is no cost to join Apple’s independent repair program – and even the process for certification as an AASP is free of charge. The caveat is that the organization must have a certified AASP in order to join the independent repair program. Apple has launched a successful pilot program with 20 independent repair businesses across the globe, and the recent announcement expands the program to the United States with plans to expand globally moving forward.

This is huge news for organizations that utilize Apple products – iPhones, iPads and Macbooks specifically. In the past the secretive nature of Apple’s repairs meant that prices could be set at whatever price Apple was comfortable with. If you were to go to an independent contractor, the warrantee on the product was void – if the independent source messed up then that device became worthless.

This program expands the amount of AASPs exponentially. It will create an actual market for Apple product repairs, which will allow for supply and demand to normalize the price to something fair and reasonable. Organizations are no longer beholden to Apple for the lifetime of the product after purchasing Apple products – and they can rest easy knowing independent AASPs have been properly trained and received the proper equipment to fix Apple devices.

New Containter and Cloud-Native Workload Protection Platform from SentinelOne https://mytechdecisions.com/network-security/new-containter-and-cloud-native-workload-protection-platform-from-sentinelone/ https://mytechdecisions.com/network-security/new-containter-and-cloud-native-workload-protection-platform-from-sentinelone/#respond Thu, 15 Aug 2019 18:00:12 +0000 https://mytechdecisions.com/?p=18160 The new platform from SentinelOne provides unified cloud-native prevention, detection, response, and hunting for containers and cloud infrastructure.

The post New Containter and Cloud-Native Workload Protection Platform from SentinelOne appeared first on My TechDecisions.

]]>
SentinelOne has announced the release of its next generation of server and workload protection. The new product has been purpose-built for containers, managed or unmanagred Kubernetes systems, and delivers SentinelOne’s patented Behavioral AI and autonomous response capabilities across all major Linux platforms – physical and virtual, cloud-native workloads, and containers. The product provides prevention, detection, response, and hunting for today and tomorrow’s cyber threats. This will include malicious files and live attacks across cloud-native and containerized environments. The product offers advanced response options and autonomous remediation.

“As organizations increasingly turn to cloud-native architectures, their perimeter – as well as their attack surface – expands to the cloud,” says Tomer Weingarten, Co-founder and CEO of SentinelOne. “These workloads require the same level of monitoring, provisioning, and protection as any other device on the corporate network. SentinelOne’s server and workload protection solves this common frustration by providing visibility, protection, and context into what’s happening across each and every cloud workload, container, and virtual machine on the network, and more importantly, real-time protection from attacks.”

Critical business infrastructures are powered by and reside in the cloud as containerized workloads. While many EPP and EDR tools rely on the cloud for detection, tools are not optimized to protect the cloud attack surface. The new server and workload protection from SentinelOne is built for containerized workloads as well as deployments on traditional servers in the cloud and in private data centers. It provides full visibility and response capabilities across these infrastructures.

SentinelOne’s server and workload protection is infrastructure agnostic and can be deployed either in containers themselves, or in the machines that host them, in servers or in the cloud.

More about SentinelOne:

SentinelOne delivers autonomous endpoint protection through a single agent that successfully prevents, detects and responds to attacks across all major vectors. Designed for extreme ease of use, the S1 platform saves customers time by applying AI to automatically eliminate threats in real time for both on premise and cloud environments and is the only solution to provide full visibility across networks directly from the endpoint.

The post Argonne Completes Largest Single File Transfer in Globus History appeared first on My TechDecisions.

]]>
This week research data management service Globus announced that the largest single file transfer in the history of the company occurred. A team of scientists at Argonne National Laboratory led the movement of 2.9 petabytes of data – part of a research project involving three of the largest cosmological simulations to date.

The data was stored on the Oak Ridge Summit supercomputer, which is currently the world’s fastests supercomputer. Globus was tasked with moving files from disk to tape, a typical migration for researchers. Globus is software-as-a-service for research data management, used by hundreds of research institutions and high-performance computing (HPC) facilities worldwide. The service enables secure, reliable file transfer, sharing, and data publication for managing data throughout the research lifecycle.

“Storage is in general a very large problem in our community — the Universe is just very big, so our work can often generate a lot of data,” says Katrin Heitmann, Argonne physicist and computational scientist and an Oak Ridge National Laboratory Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) Early Science user. “Using Globus to easily move the data around between different storage solutions and institutions for analysis is essential.

“Due to its uniqueness, the data is very precious and the analysis will take time,” says Dr. Heitmann. “The first step after the simulations were finished was to make a backup copy of the data to HPSS, so we can move the data back and forth between disk and tape and thus carry out the analysis in steps. We use Globus for this work due to its speed, reliability, and ease of use.”

“With exascale imminent, AI on the rise, HPC systems proliferating, and research teams more distributed than ever, fast, secure, reliable data movement and management are now more important than ever,” says Ian Foster, Globus co-founder and director of Argonne’s Data Science and Learning Division. “We tend to take these functions for granted, and yet modern collaborative research would not be possible without them.”
