Jamestown, New York is investing in its youth and planning for the future by modernizing the Jamestown Public School district with new LG CreateBoard smart boards that deliver enhanced learning opportunities, increased engagement and direct relevance to students’ daily lives and skill sets. District officials and technology providers have outfitted every classroom across the district’s ten K-12 schools with 86-inch LG CreateBoards, offering faculty and students expanded access to popular digital learning tools while simplifying technology management through LG’s centralized platforms.

When recent school funding initiatives made it possible for the municipality to invest in education upgrades, Chuck Marzec, the district’s director of technology, turned to Larry Meister, president of IT solutions provider Mercury Networks. Meister, who has worked with the district for over a decade, collaborated with Marzec to determine which products and solutions would maximize learning benefits for the most students. Considering the timing, pricing, and available funding, they concluded that the LG CreateBoards could transform the experiences of every student and deliver forward-thinking classrooms that prepare students for a tech-filled world and job market.

The district last updated its projection-based classroom systems in 2012, before the explosion of new touch-sensitive smart boards that are sweeping across the education landscape. Attractive pricing helped convince the district that smart boards would be the most impactful, sustainable and widely deployable solution, offering greater capabilities than existing systems while standardizing every classroom to simplify daily management and long-term maintenance.

Jamestown Schools Transforms Learning with Interactive LG CreateBoards

“LG’s easy-to-use CreateBoard interactive digital boards come at an incredible value, making them the best fit for Jamestown Public Schools. The district initially considered outfitting about half of its classrooms with a competitor product at double the price. With the CreateBoard, they’re essentially doubling their investment, creating streamlined experiences for staff and students in every room and school,” Meister explained. “The district’s previous projection systems were single-room solutions lacking significant communication options and new advances in interactivity or cloud-based learning tools. Now, with the LG CreateBoards, they have a unified 500+ display network that can be monitored, managed, and used to distribute content from a single location for morning announcements or emergencies. Additionally, the ability to set automatic on/off schedules ensures no energy is wasted, eliminating one task for today’s busy teachers.”

The district is excited about what the technology can unleash in terms of classroom participation and faculty lesson plans, including simple access to popular web-based tools such as Google Classroom. The 40-point multi-touch digital displays allow a variety of interactive lesson plans and activities that can invite multiple students to use the board at once, in addition to convenient streaming and mobile device connections for educators and students alike. For instance, teachers can quickly log in to their accounts for Google and other services by scanning an on-screen QR code with their smartphone, and then leave the room knowing that the display automatically logs out of all accounts when the wireless connection is severed.

“It’s hard to overstate the value of standardized solutions for our students, faculty and district as a whole,” Marzec says. “Running a school or district involves a lot of moving parts, and when we have teachers who may use multiple classrooms or even multiple buildings throughout a day or a week, giving them the same tools everywhere ensures there’s no time lost sorting out technical issues or troubleshooting compatibility with their prepared lessons. The same is true for today’s students who have never known a world without touchscreens. With a streamlined experience year after year, they can become fairly advanced users of the LG CreateBoard technology throughout their education, helping develop explicit technical skills alongside the school’s curriculum.”

With LG CreateBoards, teachers can easily augment lessons with presentations or videos, screen share lessons or content from their own devices and enable students to screen share projects from their devices. With the new centralized control capabilities, Jamestown Public Schools can also easily deliver video morning announcements to every room without any action required from teachers. Lessons can be saved and stored online for later viewing and study, including live annotations over text or video that enable teachers to provide context, information or discussion to delve further than standard textbook descriptions or pre-prepared content.

LG CreateBoards Enhance Teaching

According to Jason Hubbard, senior account manager for education at LG Business Solutions, implementing CreateBoards can also fundamentally change how teachers approach the classroom by freeing them to leave their desk when using digital resources.

“The two-way connection between laptops and the LG CreateBoard means that they can control and manipulate their computer or content from the CreateBoard, unlike a projection system or other non-smart solution where they have to be at the desk to exert control,” says Hubbard. “This offers educators greater freedom of movement and caters to a variety of teaching styles, which can aid engagement and attentiveness, directly affecting student and school outcomes.”

When consulting Mercury Networks, the district considered different manufacturers and options, landing on the LG CreateBoard solution based on capabilities, manufacturer support and cost. The upgrade project began with 10 initial installations at the high school, then an expansion to five schools, and then the final decision to outfit every classroom all at once ahead of the 2024-2025 school year. Each room’s audio solution is also being upgraded to provide better sound quality and ensure long-term consistency for all users.

“We are excited to see our teachers and students leverage these technologies for greater collaboration and enhanced discussions in a way that encourages participation and connects with students’ daily experiences and digital lifestyles,” Marzec adds. “Additionally, buying into LG’s ecosystem has offered us new opportunities to consider deploying connected digital signage displays in hallways, cafeterias, entrances and other public spaces to provide school messaging or community content such as student achievement reels or replays of events including sports, performances, guest speeches and extracurricular activities.”

Marzec also noted how LG’s attention to detail and willingness to provide assistance went above and beyond his expectations. In the past, technology providers had been much more hands-off, while LG acted more like a partner in terms of working to answer questions, resolve issues and ensure the district was fully satisfied with the outcome. The last installations concluded in early July 2024, with every classroom at every school ready to launch for the fall semester.

As new decisions are made surrounding distance learning and hybrid classrooms, Key Digital offers its new take on BYOD 4K wireless presentation gateway devices for the education market.

The new KD-BYOD4K for KDPlay is now available.

Key Digital says its ease of use and powerful annotation tools makes this stand-alone unit the full solution for the future of education.

More information from the company:

“Whether utilizing the full presenter mode or simultaneously sharing content from up to four participants in multi-presenter mode, the auto-adjusting screen layout casts from presenters’ laptops, tablets, and smartphones to the display.

“Using the mouse forwarding feature allows up to four users to connect a mouse or interactive display to the unit to point and click on the casted devices.”

Related: AV over IT Benefits to Education Spaces

Key Digital says screen overlay tools provide real-time collaboration with the writing and mark-up implements designed as features and gestures already familiar to educators. Screen captures can be downloaded via QR codes or in the web browser.

The unit offers an extended monitor feature for distance learning and video conferencing with dual display setups.

“BYO devices might have been around a while, but it wasn’t until we needed to integrate such tools with our system designs that we truly learned how frustrating the competitive products are for end-users.

“As always, our engineers took to heart every nuance necessary to make a more successful content sharing system at a better price-point. One of the main points of praise has been its smooth and superior handling of video and streaming, a stark contrast to other BYO devices on the market.

“We believe that every educator in the world deserves our easy-to-use KD-BYOD4K and its powerful annotation tools,” said Scott Craig, Key Digital’s National Sales Manager for the Northern United States.

Windows computers, Mac computers, and Android devices cast KD-BYOD4K using the KDPlay software while iOS devices cast natively with AirPlay.

Duquesne University recently outfitted more than 40 classrooms with Nureva HDL300 audio conferencing systems and an additional 32 systems have been ordered.

SMARTSolution Technologies, an authorized Nureva dealer, supported the university in its search for an audio conferencing system to help students learn in a hybrid environment, where some students are in the classroom and others are participating in remote learning.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duquesne was using several Nureva systems they purchased in late 2019 and early 2020. Once the need to shift to a hybrid learning model became apparent, the university installed another 37 units specifically for those classrooms.

Most recently, Duquesne installed a Dual HDL300 system in a mock courtroom at the School of Law. An additional 32 units have been ordered, with plans for a campus-wide implementation of Nureva audio systems. Classroom technology specialists set up all the wall-mounted units themselves.

Duquesne’s COVID-19 Master Plan reflects safety measures and protocols that the university has taken to create a structured campus environment that allows for face-to-face and hybrid classes, adapted living conditions and other necessary changes, while making it possible for students to be on Duquesne’s campus and earn a high-quality education.

Since August 2019, the Duquesne academic affairs department – which includes faculty and technology teams – has been working to create HyFlex, an educational experience that provides students with both in-class and remote instruction during the fall semester.

The HDL300 systems are powered by Nureva’s Microphone Mist technology, which provides the full-room microphone coverage needed to accommodate the Master Plan’s physical distancing-requirements and ensure remote students can hear every word and feel engaged in the class.

For professors and lecturers, lapel and podium mics are never needed, giving them freedom from the constraints and potential complications of conventional audio-conferencing solutions.

For IT and AV support staff, the system’s continuous auto-calibration provides optimal performance no matter how the classroom is configured or how many times the configuration changes.

“This is a new way of teaching and learning for most universities, and we are delighted that Duquesne continues to deploy our systems across the university,“  said Nureva CEO Nancy Knowlton.

Duquesne University is one of a growing number of post-secondary institutions globally that are broadly deploying Nureva audio systems to meet the needs of hybrid learning models.

Nureva audio systems enable these institutions to continue providing a high-quality education to students by delivering advanced full-room audio coverage in classrooms and lecture halls.

In-room participants can make full use of their space, and remote students can fully engage and feel like they are in the room with classmates.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced the approval of 148 Smart Schools Investment Plans aimed at improving school security and reimagining teaching and learning for the 21st century with school tech.

The approved plans, totaling $94 million, are part of the $2 billion Smart Schools Bond Act — a sweeping education technology initiative first proposed by the Governor and overwhelmingly approved by voters.

The Smart Schools Review Board met for the 15th time on Thursday to consider investment plans submitted by school districts and special education schools, according to a press release from the governor’s office. The Board is composed of the Director of the Budget, the Chancellor of the State University of New York, and the Commissioner of the State Education Department.

The plans that were approved were submitted by 131 school districts and five special education schools. Projects include $52.2 million for classroom technology, $13.7 million for school connectivity, $24.9 million for high-tech security and $2 million for pre-kindergarten classrooms. A summary of the plans is available here.

With the Smart Schools Bond Act, school districts are investing in school tech such as computer servers, interactive whiteboards, tablets, desktop and laptop computers, and high-speed broadband and wireless connectivity.

This technology helps students to learn at their own pace, expands access to advanced courses and interactive curriculum and enhances communication between parents and teachers.

Investments in high-tech school security support the purchase of new equipment, such as emergency notification systems and other safety technology.

Additional investments in the construction of pre-kindergarten classrooms will help ensure that students learn in modern, updated spaces.

State Budget Director Robert F. Mujica said, “Through the Smart Schools program, we are providing the tools schools need to operate modern classrooms that students can connect with no matter where they are – all the more important as we contend with the ongoing public health crisis. At the same time, new technology will enhance our school security to keep children safe when they are in the building while also positioning our students for success in the 21st century economy.”

Some schools will soon reopen in the fall — at whatever capacity they can in the wake of COVID-19 — yet many still suffer from alarmingly common school safety issues.

Many school districts hire security consultants to do walkthroughs of their campuses to look for security risks. These assessments often consist of two parts: the physical assessment of each school to identify security measures and building systems unique to each building, and an assessment of each school’s operations and security policies.

All of these aspects of school safety must be reviewed and corrected when schools reopen.

Seemingly small security mistakes, such as leaving a janitor’s closet unlocked, can put students and teachers in harm’s way and cannot be overlooked.

That is why we have put together a list of photos from actual school security assessments conducted by Safe Havens International, a non-profit campus safety organization.

Safe Havens consultants provide feedback to schools on how they can improve security but also give feedback on where they are excelling in protecting their students and staff. These photos include both do’s and don’ts.

Let’s begin: do your buildings suffer from these common school security issues?

What’s wrong with this picture?

This single-occupant restroom door locking system can pose a safety hazard if staff who work in the area are not provided with the correct unlocking wrench and made aware of how to remove the silver cover that conceals the locking mechanism.

If a staff member needs to unlock the door for a medical emergency, assault or situation where a person inside is at risk of self-harm, a bad situation can quickly become worse. Exacerbating the situation, some employees have used “super glue” to secure the covers because they fall off.

What about this?

While marking main exterior doors for emergency wayfinding is an excellent practice, marking of individual classroom and office windows can create increased risk.

For example, if an estranged relational partner wants to abduct their child to get revenge, this could help them identify their intended victim’s location when they feel security measures would likely prevent them from entering the building.

As these types of acts of violence are more common than active assailant events, the risks and benefits of this practice should be considered before using this approach.

What about this lock?

This faith-based school has installed a secure key box for emergency responders at the main entry gate and another box near the entry door. The box near the main entry door has also been installed out of view from inside the school which can allow emergency responders to approach the box without being observed from inside the school.

Responders would have to vault the security fencing to avoid being observed doing so. For this reason, some schools mount an extra box in an out of view area on the perimeter of the campus.

What’s wrong with this workspace?

The campus employee has left their photo identification card at their unoccupied desk. It could be easily taken by someone with ill-intentions to gain access to restricted areas.

What about this room?

This room in a school library has a partially closed partition, creating an area that is not visible from the viewpoint of library staff.

These types of semi-private areas are difficult to supervise, and incidents, such as consensual sex acts between students and drug usage, commonly occur in these types of areas.

What’s wrong here?

This photo depicts what are known as target identifiers. The student names and photos on the wall could be used by a non-custodial parent or another aggressor to locate a target inside the school. This tactic has been used during actual and attempted abductions and attacks across the country.

With distance learning and videoconferencing on the rise, the FBI says it has received reports that video platforms are being hijacked (“Zoom-bombing”).

Two schools in Massachusetts reported the following incidents:

  • In late March 2020, a Massachusetts-based high school reported that while a teacher was conducting an online class using the teleconferencing software Zoom, an unidentified individual(s) dialed into the classroom. This individual yelled a profanity and then shouted the teacher’s home address in the middle of instruction.
  • A second Massachusetts-based school reported a Zoom meeting being accessed by an unidentified individual. In this incident, the individual was visible on the video camera and displayed swastika tattoos.

The FBI recommends individuals take the following steps to mitigate teleconference hijacking threats:

  • Do not make meetings or classrooms public. In Zoom, there are two options to make a meeting private: require a meeting password or use the waiting room feature and control the admittance of guests.
  • Do not share a link to a teleconference or classroom on an unrestricted publicly available social media post. Provide the link directly to specific people.
• Manage screensharing options. In Zoom, change screensharing to “Host Only.”
  • Ensure users are using the updated version of remote access/meeting applications. In January 2020, Zoom updated their software. In their security update, the teleconference software provider added passwords by default for meetings and disabled the ability to randomly scan for meetings to join.
  • Lastly, ensure that your organization’s telework policy or guide addresses requirements for physical and information security.

If you were a victim of a teleconference hijacking, or any cyber-crime, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Additionally, if you receive a specific threat during a teleconference, report it at tips.fbi.gov or call the FBI Boston Division at (857) 386-2000.

The FBI is also warning that videoconferencing and children’s increased online presence pose an increased risk for child exploitation. The agency is warning parents, educators, caregivers and children about the dangers of online sexual exploitation and signs of child abuse.

The FBI is providing the following background information on this issue:

Online sexual exploitation comes in many forms. Individuals may coerce victims into providing sexually explicit images or videos of themselves, often in compliance with offenders’ threats to post the images publicly or send the images to victims’ friends and family.

Other offenders may make casual contact with children online, gain their trust, and introduce sexual conversation that increases in egregiousness over time. Ultimately this activity may result in maintaining an online relationship that includes sexual conversation and the exchange of illicit images, to eventually physically meeting the child in-person.

In order for the victimization to stop, children typically have to come forward to someone they trust—typically a parent, teacher, caregiver, or law enforcement. The embarrassment of being enticed and/or coerced to engage in unwanted behavior is what often prevents children from coming forward. Offenders may have hundreds of victims around the world, so coming forward to help law enforcement identify offenders may prevent countless other incidents of sexual exploitation.

Abuse can occur offline through direct contact with another individual. During these uncertain conditions, where time with other adults and caregivers has increased immensely, parents/guardians should communicate with their children about appropriate contact with adults and watch for any changes in behavior, including an increase in nightmares, withdrawn behavior, angry outbursts, anxiety, depression, not wanting to be left alone with an individual, and sexual knowledge.

The FBI recommends parents and guardians take the following precautions:

  • Discuss Internet safety with children of all ages when they engage in online activity.
  • Review and approve games and apps before they are downloaded.
  • Make sure privacy settings are set to the strictest level possible for online gaming systems and electronic devices.
  • Monitor your children’s use of the Internet; keep electronic devices in an open, common room of the house.
  • Check your children’s profiles and what they post online.
  • Explain to your children that images posted online will be permanently on the Internet.
  • Make sure children know that anyone who asks a child to engage in sexually explicit activity online should be reported to a parent, guardian, or other trusted adult and law enforcement.
  • Remember that victims should not be afraid to tell law enforcement if they are being sexually exploited. It is not a crime for a child to send sexually explicit images to someone if they are compelled or coerced to do so.
  • Teach your children about body safety and boundaries.
  • Encourage your children to have open communication with you.
  • Be mindful of who is watching your child for childcare/babysitting, playdates and overnight visits.
  • If your child discloses abuse, immediately contact local law enforcement for assistance.
  • Children experiencing hands-on abuse may exhibit withdrawn behavior, angry outbursts, anxiety, depression, not wanting to be left alone with a specific individual, non-age appropriate sexual knowledge, and an increase in nightmares.

The agency urges everyone to report suspected sexual exploitation in the following ways:

  • Contact your local law enforcement agency.
  • Contact your local FBI field office or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.
  • File a report with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) at 1-800-843-5678 or online at www.cybertipline.org.

In a press release, the FBI made the following recommendations regarding reporting: “… be as descriptive as possible in the complaint form by providing as much of the following as possible:

  • Name and/or user name of the subject.
  • Email addresses and phone numbers used by the subject.
  • Websites used by the subject.
  • Description of all interaction with the subject.
  • Try to keep all original documentation, emails, text messages, and logs of communication with the subject. Do not delete anything before law enforcement is able to review it.
  • Tell law enforcement everything about the online encounters—we understand it may be embarrassing for the parent or child, but providing all relevant information is necessary to find the offender, stop the abuse, and bring him/her to justice.”

Zoom, a provider of videoconferencing, says that since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, the number of its users has skyrocketed from about 10 million to hundreds of millions, reports CBS News. Its founder and CEO Eric Yuan said his company wasn’t prepared for the influx of new users.

Yuan told CBS News that novice Zoom users generally don’t use passwords or enable additional security features, unlike most businesses with IT departments.

He admitted his company’s failings: “When we offer the free service, we should have a training session, we should enable a password. Looking back, we should have done that. Absolutely. This is our oversight.”

Pickpocketing and common robbery on on the rise at K-12 schools and college campuses, according to a study which focused on mobile device theft.

The 2020 Mobile Theft and Loss Report, released by Prey, Inc., an open-source anti-theft software provider, found it is six times more likely that a device owner is pickpocketed at school or work than at a bar.

For educational institutions, from 2018 to 2019, pickpocketing grew by 6.37% to 17.58%. Common robbery at schools also increased by 10.51% to 17.65%, making schools and universities the second most frequent place for mobile robbery.

Additionally, the report found the stealing of mobile devices during home invasions and business break-ins have increased by 5.17% and 2.11%, respectively.

As for the location of these theft incidents, expectedly secure locations (homes, schools, offices) accounted for 65% and expectedly insecure locations (streets, malls, public transportation) accounted for the remaining 35%.

As for the type of devices stolen, 77% were mobiles (phones, tablets), 18.51% were laptops and 4.49% were desktops.

According to Prey, the increase in robberies in seemingly secure locations is due to the comfort and security expectancy users have in these places, causing them to lower their attention and alertness.

The report warns of the newest threat: opportunists. These opportunists often include students who take devices from other students or former employees who refuse to turn in their device.

“After analyzing 2019’s recovery stories, and comparing them with the ones from the previous report, we identified a third actor who is ready to take your gadgets,” reads the report.

“Opportunists are thieves, yes, but not the regular stereotype you’d find in a movie or tv series. They are people you know and share spaces with, and maybe even that you are comfortable with.”

Potential need for video security and monitoring systems

Does this rise in mobile device theft mean that these specific spaces are in need of increased video monitoring systems?

In order to help teachers keep students on task throughout the school day when they are at learning at home, Impero Software Impero Education Pro web-based software free for the remainder of the school year to districts that do not already have remote monitoring software in place.

The cross-platform product combines tools for online safety, teacher control, and real time monitoring and session tracking for student devices.

“The most important thing for schools right now is ensuring they have the tools available to support remote learning and we’re working to remove any barriers to that” says Justin Reilly, Impero CEO.

“In order to conduct lessons remotely with a group of students who are on their devices at home, teachers need a remote classroom management solution that provides a live view of the student devices, alongside online safety and learner engagement tools to keep them safe and on task.

“As a former teacher, I am sympathetic to the challenges teachers are facing in this unprecedented time and we are working diligently to support schools. That is why we are offering this tool free for the remaining three months of the school year.”

Impero Education Pro is designed to enhance learning, support IT teams and safeguard students in the digital world. Teachers have access to key tools including live thumbnail view, broadcast screen, block list, live chat, and log viewer to ensure students receive continued access to education.

With the live thumbnail view, teachers can monitor student devices in real-time and interact, intervene and control as appropriate. Teachers also have access to a full log of what each student has accessed during the school day to make sure they are staying on task. And school IT staff can view the logs to make sure the devices they sent home are being used appropriately.

Impero Education Pro can be configured in several different ways to allow schools to monitor any remote student device and utilize its tools to enhance the virtual learning experience, the company says.
