Costa Mesa, Calif.-based QSC, developers of the Q-SYS networked audio, video and control platform, announced the latest addition to its native network video solutions by introducing the NV Series NV-21-HU. This is a two-input, one-output endpoint with support for HDMI and USB-C.

According to the company, the NV-21-HU thus simplifies installation with a single-cable solution for video distribution, AV bridging and device charging via USB-C. Its compact design and reduced I/O make the NV-21-HU ideal for supporting various applications. This includes meeting rooms, learning spaces, hospitality and entertainment installations.

Main Features

As a software-configurable solution, NV-21-HU can be an encoder or decoder (in Q-SYS Designer Software). Here, it offers the ability to operate with either HDMI or USB-C connectivity. This enables integrators to provide a more flexible system that supports a broader range of devices. At the same time, it eliminates the need for adapters and in some cases, multiple cables. In addition, integrators can add AV Bridging (with an optional feature license) to extend the device’s functionality. With this, it can support full UC Platform bridging capabilities.

The NV-21-HU joins the Q-SYS video portfolio alongside the NV-32-H (Core Capable) video endpoint. It also features a more compact design. Additionally, the NV-21-HU provides more options to rightsize the application based on I/O density, form factor or available features providing maximum system design flexibility.

As a native Q-SYS device, users will have the added benefit of utilizing the software-based audio, video and control platform to enable drag-and-drop and no-code deployment. As a result, it helps save time and money in both the programming and installation phases.

“The NV-21-HU answers the needs for a lower-cost and more comprehensive solution that can address end user demands for an easy, frictionless user experience,” says Mike Brandes, senior product marketing manager, Q-SYS. “Its compact design and rightsized I/O make it ideal for more applications; while still providing the ease-of-use and deployment familiar to Q-SYS NV Series users.”

After finding success with webinars and virtual training sessions in 2021, Q-SYS, the audio, video and control platform provider, has built a new video production studio at its Costa Mesa, Calif. headquarters. This studio combines Q-SYS automation and a custom 8-feet-by-22-feet DVLED videowall from Lincolnshire, Ill.-based LG Business Solutions USA. It thus offers engaging, professional-grade broadcasts with uniquely powerful storytelling capabilities.

According to Q-SYS’ VP of Marketing-Americas, Patrick Heyn, the new studio is a trifecta that lowers costs, simplifies production and expands creative possibilities beyond available commercial spaces rented for previous productions.

The Tech Decision for a New Production Studio

“Live webinars became central to our business when in-person events paused during the pandemic. Producing video content at a rented studio space was expensive and required extensive planning and staffing,” Heyn says. “Webinar engagement has exceeded our expectations and with our plans to produce much more video content; we realized if we brought the capabilities in-house we could break even in under two years and gain greater control and accessibility. Now that the studio is up and running, we’re using it even more than expected as it provides even greater value and enables us to develop new marketing content faster and at a lower overall cost.”

Contributing to the rapid success is the use of cutting-edge technologies led by the giant DVLED screen. Per a statement, the credit also goes to the flexibility of the Q-SYS platform; and recognition by employees and partners that the space serves a variety of needs. Previous webinars produced in a rented commercial studio delivered good results and helped attract a more engaged remote audience. However, it required up to 10 people to operate all the cameras, sound, lighting, displays and other components.

Enhancing the Q-SYS Production Studio with LG

To streamline in-house productions, the team used the Q-SYS platform to control and automate dozens of peripherals and functional routines. This included the huge LG DVLED display. Now, as few as three people, plus on-camera hosts, can operate the entire studio.

“One of the major value props of our platform and ecosystem is its ability to seamlessly integrate with and support many types of technologies to enable experiences. Our new studio stands as a living testament to its power, value and simplicity,”  Heyn remarks.

The perfect complement to the Q-SYS Platform and Ecosystem, he adds, is the 1.5mm pixel pitch LG DVLED display. Its brightness, sharpness and high contrast ratio allows Q-SYS to deliver a crisp, vibrant HD background for every in-house production.

Q-SYS also uses the studio as a tool to host professionally produced virtual events, typically attracting thousands of attendees per event. Furthermore, now that live events have returned and more people are attending trade shows; the team plans to synergize virtual and in-person outreach. They will do so by holding online events before and during each physical event. With this, they aim to maximize engagement and accessibility for dealers, industry pros and end users worldwide.

A Production Studio Built to Last

“We need our training and dealer education sessions to deliver a deeply engaging experience for viewers. And we know that a higher production value can be the key to keeping their attention,” Heyn says. “We use the incredible LG display as a cutting-edge canvas from which to tell our technology story. It lets us complement our spirited hosts with custom visualizations that serve to draw the audience in. All of these pieces working together has resulted in an incredible 96% attendance rate for one-hour webinars as well as a 50% attendance in breakout groups after the main presentation.”

The idea to incorporate a sizeable DVLED display directly on the stage came from previous video projects. Still, the Q-SYS team didn’t have direct hands-on experience choosing or installing such a display. LG thus stepped in to help with multiple technicians aiding product selection, on-site installation and integration. Following the inaugural uses of the studio and the videowall; several Q-SYS regional offices expressed interest in incorporating LG DVLED displays.

“While some technologies today seem to be built for planned obsolescence,” adds Dan Baker, business development manager at LG Business Solutions USA, This studio shows that Q-SYS flipped that by creating a remarkable technology space with planned longevity. This is a great example of how content creators and event producers can use our latest DVLED products to increase engagement, information retention and excitement for live presentations and webinars.”

The Philadelphia Eagles, having been beat by the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LVII, have made major technology upgrades to its home-game venue at Lincoln Financial Field. Nestled within the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, the Lincoln Financial Field is a nearly 20-year-old stadium with a seating capacity of approximately 70,000.

In August 2003, Lincoln Financial Field opened for visitors. Since its grand opening, the Philadelphia Eagles have invested in a number of physical and technology upgrades. The upgrades included seating expansion, two new HD videoboards, upgraded amenities, Wi-Fi, and two new connecting bridges for upper levels. Since the initial upgrades, the Philadelphia Eagles found themselves reevaluating its outdated, legacy AV system. “The system was traditionally serviced by a large HDMI matrix but the system was reaching the end of its life and it was time for us to build a future-proof solution,” says David Sullivan, broadcast and AV engineer for Philadelphia Eagles. Sullivan and his team wanted a solution that was capable of distributing high-definition and 4k video through multiple buildings.

The Visionary PacketAV Matrix Series Solution

Sullivan adds, “We explored an IP-based solution to create a future-proof system. The goal was to leverage a network-based solution, provide greater flexibility and lower our troubleshooting calls. We were led to Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series due to their tight integration with QSC Q-SYS. We were incredibly excited to deploy our first PacketAV Encoder and Decoders in the meeting rooms and training rooms. Although, both are very high-value spaces for us. The football operations primarily use the meeting rooms and training rooms so we required a seamless integration.”

Visionary’s IP video technology provides flexible, scalable and reliable solutions suitable for large-scale installations. An IP-based solution enables the end-user to monitor and control remotely using an IP network as the system’s backbone. “Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series paired with QSC’s Q-SYS platform provides us with a piece of mind that the video is coming into the system and being distributed to the display,” says Sullivan. “With a traditional fixed HDMI matrix solution, you have no monitoring capability unless you’re in the room. Visionary’s IP-based solution enables us to sit in our office in a different zip code and pull up any stream from any room and quality control the signal. We can state with confidence that the video is leaving the decoder and going to the display, or a number of displays.”

Project Expansion

The Philadelphia Eagles initial success with Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Visionary led to a significant expansion in the project’s scope. Sullivan explains, “We started with a few training rooms and we’re finalizing a large-scale replacement where we have phased out every single large-frame video matrix and replaced it with Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series. Today, we are utilizing Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series to distribute video through our training facility and stadium.”

Sullivan adds, “We integrated Visionary’s PackeTV AVN series H.264 IPTV Encoders to distribute local video feeds from the scoreboard, production, and television truck to the stadium suites. There are 1,400 HD television endpoints in the stadium complex. The televisions were initially integrated in 2014, therefore, the system had higher latency and lower picture quality. The PackeTV AVN Series H.264 IPTV encoders provided a solution to update our existing infrastructure and provide a solution with lower latency and higher video quality. We were transitioning to 1080p and required an encoder that could handle 1080p. The PackeTV AVN series H.264 IPTV encoders created a reliable solution to distribute time-aligned video between each display in the stadium suites.”

Visionary’s PackeTV IPTV ecosystem, including the PackeTV AVN Series H.264 IPTV Encoder, is a modular, end-to-end solution for any organization. It is designed to deliver and manage real-time and recorded video over virtually any network. The PackeTV AVN Series H.264 IPTV Encoder transforms live video sources into full-screen, full resolution, Internet Protocol Digital Video, compatible with multicast, webcast, and video-on-demand protocols.

Reconfiguring Meeting Spaces with Visionary PacketAV Matrix & Q-SYS

Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series has provided the Philadelphia Eagles with a new level of flexibility. “During COVID-19, we had to relocate and reconfigure the traditional meeting space,” says Sullivan. “We cleared an entire building floor. It was originally cubicles, but we turned the floor into a large meeting room because those individuals were staying at home. We took one encoder from the auditorium and sent it to 10 decoders across different rooms within the building. Traditionally, it would require a large AV integration and a significant investment. With Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series, we could repurpose Ethernet connections and add a few displays to create a new meeting space. Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series, paired with QSC Q-SYS, is the Swiss Army Knife of AV integration.”

Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series provides powerful cinema-quality, ultra-low latency video resolutions while bypassing the constraints of traditional switch matrix distribution systems.

“We were concerned the coaches would notice a difference in quality, compression and latency between the HDMI and IP-based solutions,” notes Sullivan. “The football coaches are using a handheld trigger and they are expecting an immediate response when they press play. Immediately, we realized Visionary’s IP solution paired with a capable network was able to handle this type of bandwidth. Overall, the end user experience has been really great.”

Sullivan calls Visionary’s customer service unparalleled, saying the company quickly addresses issues, which is particularly important in the fast-paced world of the NFL

“We’re wearing many hats, but, if something is broken, we are responsible for getting the system up and running,” Sullivan says. “We’ve found Visionary’s customer support to be incredibly helpful.”

Sullivan adds, “We’re really excited about the future of Visionary’s PacketAV Matrix Series. The latest addition with Bluetooth-enabled Wall Plate Encoders has been an exciting development for us. We’ve been purchasing a competitor’s Bluetooth-enabled Wall Plate Encoder for years. Today, we are integrating Visionary’s new Wall Plate Encoders as a reliable, future-proof solution.”

Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Q-SYS announced the availability of Q-SYS vCore, the first virtualized processor for Q-SYS and the accompanying Q-SYS Control feature license for vCore. This collectively allows integrators and end users to enlist their own compute device to add Q-SYS Control capabilities for enhanced control, automation, UX capabilities, remote monitoring and helpdesk features to systems.

The Q-SYS vCore / Q-SYS Control feature license is ideal for simple AV systems that do not require dedicated Q-SYS audio or video functionality. It’s also suitable for features already fulfilled with standalone hardware, legacy audio-only DSP, as well as those that need to replace aging control systems. Additionally, it creates a bridge for those less complex rooms, that typically have disparate pieces of hardware, to enable cloud-based remote monitoring and management capabilities with Q-SYS Reflect Enterprise Manager.

Benefits of vCore

Built using Q-SYS OS, the same standards-based IT architecture as the rest of the Q-SYS Platform, the vCore/Q-SYS Control feature license is able to deploy the same control engine as the rest of the Q-SYS processing portfolio. It also empowers IT staff to standardize system control with access to Q-SYS Open, a toolkit of industry-standard protocols and open developer tools. vCore also uses the same Q-SYS Designer Software to build, design and deploy systems. Thus, it allows users to scale control programming from the vCore into a physical Core if/when the need arises.
