Duke Kunshan University (DKU) has installed 116 Sennheiser TCC 2 Ceiling Array Microphones in 50 classrooms and various other spaces across its campus, providing students and faculty with an immersive blended learning experience that is both superior in sound quality and easy to operate.

Located in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province in  China, DKU is an educational and research university situated on a 1,200-acre campus. The university offers a range of  academic programs and a diverse, inclusive culture to students from around the globe.

The large-scale audio video project is part of the university’s second phase, covering 22 buildings on campus, including 29 classrooms, 20 conference rooms, and a visitor center. DKU set its sights on a number of top global brands. In the end, the Sennheiser TCC 2 ceiling array microphone stood out due to its superior audio technology, open technology path and rich success experience. DKU chose to install a total of 116 TCC 2s so that every space can enjoy the trusted Sennheiser audio quality.

The Sennheiser TCC 2 Solution

DKU offers courses taught by faculty from Duke University in the U.S. as well as other locations around the world. As a result, the university requires each classroom to provide an online learning experience as if it were face-to-face. Audio equipment, in particular, not only needs to be clear in sound quality, stable in transmission, and easy to operate, but it also needs to fit seamlessly into different room types and teaching scenarios.

The TCC 2 utilizes patented Dynamic Beamforming technology, which automatically tracks the position of speakers and switches between speakers in real time, ensuring that their voices are clearly captured. Teachers are able to move around and communicate freely with students while teaching, and the layout of desks and chairs in the classroom can be flexibly adjusted to enhance the classroom experience. According to Sennheiser, the microphone’s built-in 28 broadcast-quality microphone heads make the sound clear and natural, and remote teachers and students can also listen to the speakers clearly as if they were in the room/

In addition to classrooms, schools also place a high value on the design of audio systems in conference rooms. In teleconferencing, the seamless integration of audio and video is very important. In this project, TCC 2 integrates Biamp DSP and Sony PTZ camera tracking to synchronize the monitored speaker’s position to the camera, thus realizing real-time switching of the speaker’s footage, which makes the meeting more realistic, efficient and immersive.

Visitor Center Acoustics

The Visitor Center is another highlight of this project. In order to provide excellent conditions for teachers and students to communicate, display and hold activities and exhibitions, the Visitor Center built by the school has a flexible layout and a bright and spacious space, with an area of 400 square meters and a height of 4.8 meters, in addition to the need for high-quality sound pickup, the site of the local sound reinforcement is also a very high demand. Three TCC 2s were installed in the Visitor Center, whose TruVoicelift acoustic enhancement feature delivers everyone’s speeches clearly to every corner, with natural, full sound quality and no distortion or delay, making for a truly immersive audio experience.

AV-over-IP Integration

The DKU Phase II project, which took three years to design and deploy and complete, was not only large in scale but complex. The project’s audiovisual system included many types of products including Biamp DSP, Bose loudspeakers and Crestron control systems. Therefore, for the success of the whole project, easy operation process and seamless integration of products of each link are crucial, which is also the main challenge of the project manager.

Wan Li is the chief engineer at DKU and the university’s technical lead for the audio system design. His team adopted an all-digital and fully distributed AV-over-IP architecture for the University. The TCC 2 can be seamlessly integrated into the campus network with all brands of audio equipment via Dante, allowing IT managers to monitor and control the communication, interaction and control of various devices on campus in real time via cell phones, tablets or computers, greatly simplifying workflows.

Sennheiser’s business communication solutions have an open audio/video ecosystem with strong compatibility and can be integrated with different brands of devices and platforms. TCC 2 has been certified by Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Tencent Conference and Nail Conference to meet the preferences and needs of all types of users.

The Sennheiser EW-DX family of radio microphones are designed to simplify professional workflows and make wireless audio a breeze, and the products fit the bill, allowing any non-audio professional to deploy and use this advanced audio technology.

Ideal for live performances, rental companies, theatres, boardrooms, lecture halls, presentations, houses of worship or broadcasting, the EW-DX is a truly versatile and easy-to-use system. The product is an evolution of Sennheiser’s EW G4 series, but offers the lowest latency on the market at 1.9 milliseconds, the company claims.

Simplicity and versatility

Essentially, everything about Sennheiser’s EW-DX makes setup and use easy, especially for those unfamiliar with audio systems. All it took to test it out was to plug it in, connect it to PA head and switch the handheld receiver on. An Auto Scan button automatically assigns channels using an equidistant tuning grid that allows users to pack more channels more reliably, without intermodulation interference.

The German audio manufacturer is known for its audio quality, and that professional-grade audio is essentially a given in any Sennheiser product. As such, the handheld transmitter immediately became the best-sounding microphone I have ever used.

For IT professionals tasked with provisioning and deploying audio equipment and microphones for boardrooms or lecture halls, the EW-DX may be perfect, as it includes an Auto Scan function to help users find good frequencies for the receiver or multiple networked receivers.

Sennheiser also designed the EW-DX to be scalable, giving organizations multiple hardware options, including 2-channel half-rack (9,5″) or 4-channel full-rack (19″) receivers, while giving organizations the ability to expand if need be.

Transmitters are synced via Bluetooth Low Energy, and no line of sight is required.

The receiver is fitted with a headphone output and volume control, both balanced XLR and unbalanced 6.3mm analogue outputs, and an RJ 45 port for Power over Ethernet and integration into control and monitoring networks.

The EW-DX line includes a bodypack transmitter, the ED-DX SK 3-PIN, that seems to be perfect for speakers that want to have their hands free via a clip-on or headset mic without sacrificing audio quality.

Manageability and control

IT professionals will be happy to know that the EW-DX includes Dante networked audio, Ethernet control ports and AES-256 encryption that allows the system to be securely transmitted and placed on IT networks.

Setting it up in a corporate meeting space or lecture hall is seamless, and managing it is just as simple with tools like Sennheiser’s Control Cockpit, Wireless Systems Manager and Smart Assist app.

The company’s Smart Assist mobile app or advanced software like its Wireless Systems Manager and Control Cockpit give organizations even more visibility and control in complex, networked environments.

The company markets the EW-DX as its most versatile digital wireless system, with broad applicability across high education campuses, corporate meeting spaces, or live performance venues. Based on our review, we’d say that marketing language is entirely accurate.

Xilica, the Toronto-based provider of collaboration products has teamed with Sennheiser to bring physical and remote workers and learners closer together. The Xilica Follow Me automated camera-tracking module makes it easy for remote participants to engage with conference room participants from remote locations. The company attributes this to the intelligent software that identifies each new voice and follows with immediate and precise camera movements to track each speaker.

The Xilica Follow Me camera-tracking module now uses the virtual beam location of a Sennheiser TeamConnect Ceiling 2 (TCC2) microphone to automatically steer the camera to a seating position in a conference room. Remote meeting participants can then visually track the conversation based on who is speaking at the physical location.

Integrators and tech managers can configure the module using Xilica Designer software by setting specific camera positions based on the Sennheiser TCC2’s beam angle and selecting the appropriate room size and layout. The setup process also provides quality checks for audio presence and intelligibility through live metering.

Benefits of the Follow Me Module

“Our PTZ controls in the Xilica Follow Me module make it easy to focus the camera on different seating positions, and from there it is as simple as saving preset numbers with the corresponding seats and activating Follow Mefunctionality,” says Shaun Robinson, vice president, product management, Xilica.

Robinson continues, “What this really represents is the next phase of Xilica and Sennheiser’s combined efforts to simplify the technology and streamline the infrastructure in modern collaboration rooms, while ensuring that physical and remote attendees are equal participants.”

The University of Québec (UQAM) is known for delivering educational programs driven by cutting-edge research and innovation. Rather than depending on legacy technology for its infrastructure and communications, the University is continually exploring and implementing the latest cutting edge solutions to foster a superiors educational environment for both students and faculty. Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jean-François Duguay, AV and multimedia technical specialist, began implementing a transition to an AV-over-IP (AVoIP) system in the School of Management, ESG UQAM, which included over 200 Sennheiser Team Connect Ceiling 2 (TCC2) ceiling microphones.

The overall goal of the AV system was to maintain the integrity and dependability of every device on the network. Hybrid and remote learning were major components in the design program, and ensuring high-quality audio was an essential outcome for both teacher and students.

“If you have any interruptions in the voice-feed, especially for remote students who are learning in different countries, it will disrupt the classroom,” says Duguay.  They needed an overall solution that had to be both nimble and reliable. “The goal is to connect the students via broadcast across either Zoom or Teams, which was best achieved by AVoIP because all the devices are connected and can be monitored in one center. If there is a problem it can easily be identified and addressed.”

AV and IT Align

Transitioning over to an AVoIP system required a collaborative effort between both the AV and IT departments. Duguay reports that both groups had to be aligned on equipment choice, since achieving end-to-end AV quality was of the utmost importance.

François Wermenlinger, eastern Canada sales manager of Sennheiser, says, “They required great microphones, PTZ cameras as well as other devices to grab the teachers screen over the platform.” The TCC2 was the perfect solution especially considering the University faculty was comfortable with the Sennheiser SpeechLine Digital Wireless microphone system that was integrated across the entire campus in 2020.

After Jean-François did his research and tested the product with the manufacturer he decided to move forward with the TCC2.

Capturing the perfect sound

Classroom at the The University of Québec in Montréal
The new TCC2 system has been up and running for two full semesters, and the amphitheater in particular is getting heavy use. Photo by Miville Tremblay.

“The TCC2 is plug-in-play, it’s simple,” Duguay says. “Even the control software is easy to use with Control Cockpit.” Capturing Sound with 25-foot High Ceilings The integration itself was particularly challenging given the amphitheater’s 25-foot high ceiling as well as the frequent rumble from the subway stop that ran directly beneath the building. The TCC2’s also had to circumvent pre-existing elements in the facility, including a projector, roll down screen, camera, sprinklers and air patterns within the building.

Wermenlinger was an active participant in exploring design options — including strategic placement of each TCC2. “At first, I was not sure it was going to work, but we looked at the design drawings and placed five TCC2’s around the amphitheater,” says Wermenlinger. “We climbed up on ladders and taped the ceiling in mock positions.” Since the facility was undergoing simultaneous renovations, Jean François and his team were able to look at the wiring and infrastructure usually concealed by the ceiling further assisting with the install.

Sennheiser TCC2 delivers strong signal over the network

Ultimately, Duguay and his team achieved their goal. Each TCC2 device delivers a strong signal over the network. The patented Beamforming technology is able to capture the voices of both students and faculty with superior intelligibility — without the noise.

“The clarity is perfect, especially with a lot of reverberation in the big amphitheater,” adds Duguay. “The recordings are clean, and the students sound as if they are speaking into a close mic. It is an avant-garde system that is future-proofed with flexibility to be improved upon over time.”

The new TCC2 system has been up and running for two full semesters, and the amphitheater in particular is getting heavy use. It hosts roughly 300 students from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., five days a week as well as additional weekend events. The ability for staff to run diagnostics and monitor the devices remotely greatly improves the continuity.

Sennheiser has introduced its new TeamConnect Intelligent Speaker (TC ISP) for Microsoft Teams Rooms during a virtual webinar today.

According to Sennheiser, the new TC ISP expands on its TeamConnect family, built on a foundation of innovation and beamforming technology with the integration of Microsoft Teams.

The device is designed for small to medium sized rooms of up to ten people, whether participants join remotely or are in the room. It features an omnidirectional speaker with a 3.5 meter radius and seven beamforming microphones, ensuring perfect speech intelligibility. Users can connect the device to a laptop or Microsoft Teams display in a meeting room.

The speaker also transcribes the meeting in real-time while identifying up to ten different voices in the room. The TC ISP features one button for mute or unmute, without any clicking noise and an LED ring to indicate whether the device is on mute or unmuted, or interacting with Cortana. The Microsoft Cortana voice intelligence allows users to control the mic verbally for video conferencing and team meetings.

For remote participants or those who are hard of hearing, live transcription gives them a new seat at the table for immersive and supportive collaboration – all without any drawbacks or limitations, explains Sennheiser. The corresponding transcription documents are available immediately after the meeting.

“Sennheiser is known for our industry-leading TeamConnect Ceiling 2 microphone with TruVoicelift,” comments Anne Guhn, product manager at Sennheiser. “This addition to our TeamConnect family offers an opportunity for us to expand into a different sized meeting room, at a price point that some might not expect from Sennheiser.”

Addressing Privacy Concerns

When it comes to the voice and transcribed data, a Microsoft spokesperson at the webinar says the company does not control or use the meeting data, the data stays with the customer.

Users can opt-in to store audio biometrics in the cloud, in compliance with Microsoft Office 365. System Administrators can control by policy, what makes sense for their organization and geography.

Currently, the device is only supported in English for U.S, Australia, and India. As a global first-company, Sennheiser is looking forward to expanding the languages in the coming months.

Wedemark, Germany-based audio giant Sennheiser is working “intensively” to investigate how some customer data was exposed on the internet two months ago, the company says in a newly updated statement.

In a notice on its website, Sennheiser acknowledges being notified in October that some company data was displayed on the web. The company says it took immediate action to close the security gap.

According to the company, a cloud folder used for a temporary backup left some customer contact information exposed to the web.

At that time, the company says, it had been under the impression that no personal data was involved. However, the company has since learned that contact information was included.

Sennheiser’s Response

The statement reads, in part, as follows:

To our great regret, however, we learned in the meantime that contact information for some of our customers was accessible on the Internet in a cloud folder that was used for temporary data backup. This contact information (first and last name, address, and e-mail addresses as well as telephone numbers) was originally provided to register for our newsletter and for participation in online competitions.

At the end of last week, we therefore immediately complied with our duty to inform the data security authority of the state of Lower Saxony.

Although as of today we have no indication that the data from the cloud folder was accessed by third parties, we are working hard to reconstruct all details of the incident and notify potentially affected customers as soon as possible.

The statement is in response to a report from cybersecurity researchers with vpnMentor that states the data is from a cloud account dormant since 2018. It contained the contact data of over 28,000 customers.

vpnMentor says the issue was a misconfigured AWS S3 bucket, leading to more than 407,000 files and 55GB of data being exposed online. However, there is no evidence that the data was accessed or leaked, researchers say, as only the bucket’s owners know.

The vpnMentor research team discovered Sennheiser’s data vulnerability as part of a huge web-mapping project. Researchers use large-scale web scanners to search for unsecured data stores containing information that shouldn’t be exposed. They then examine each data store for any data being leaked.

Sennheiser was notified of the issue on Oct. 28 and closed the security gap on Nov. 1, according to vpnMentor.

The Data Exposed

As noted, some of the data exposed included full names, email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses. Other vulnerable information included names of companies requesting samples and number of employees of requesting companies.

According to the security researchers, the S3 bucket also contained a 4GB database backup, but it was protected.

The data was of customers and suppliers around the globe, but the majority of those exposed are based in North America and Europe, researchers say.

While the data itself will likely not lead to widespread cyberattacks or identity theft, hackers can use that data and piece it together with other available information to build a victim profile. That then can be leveraged in complex phishing campaigns designed to trick victims into providing more sensitive information, such as social security numbers, bank account details and more.

Audio device maker Sennheiser and camera tracking solutions provider 1 Beyond, released a new voice-activated camera tracking solution for rooms of any size: classrooms, boardrooms, multi-purpose meeting spaces and more.

The new cameras leverage the audio quality and accurate beam position information provided by the TeamConnect Ceiling 2 (TCC2) microphone array combined with 1 Beyond’s camera positioning algorithm to offer close-up shots of people speaking in a room, whether they are seated or standing anywhere in a room.

Multiple ceiling microphones can be combined to cover larger spaces and up to 12 cameras can be placed anywhere to get the best camera angles regardless of where the speaker is located.

Some of the distinguishing features of the solution include:

  • An intelligent switching algorithm: with multiple cameras the remote participants see broadcast style cuts and no camera movement
  • Auto-configuration based on a room design: No camera presets need to be set manually
  • Customizable shot widths: the installer can select how tight or broad the camera angles should be
  • Ability to distinguish between seated and standing participants: uses the microphone’s reported height as well as horizontal position of the talker
  • More possible camera angles per microphone: The beam can point to up to 700 unique positions giving more precise audio location information
  • Multi-source layouts: show wide shot of room along with active speaker for context
  • Discussion mode that shows the two most recent talkers in side-by-side

“1 Beyond offers advanced camera tracking that pairs perfectly with the TCC2 microphone array,” said Charlie Jones, global alliance and partnership manager for Sennheiser in a statement. “Unlike other products in the market, the TCC2 does not limit the number of zones you can use for camera tracking. This allows the real-time positional information from the microphone to automatically switch the cameras to the optimal view, regardless of where the speaker is located in the room, ensuring a lifelike meeting and classroom experience for remote participants. 1 Beyond has even automated the system setup resulting in a system that is extremely powerful while still easy to deploy.”
