Duke Kunshan University (DKU) has installed 116 Sennheiser TCC 2 Ceiling Array Microphones in 50 classrooms and various other spaces across its campus, providing students and faculty with an immersive blended learning experience that is both superior in sound quality and easy to operate.

Located in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province in  China, DKU is an educational and research university situated on a 1,200-acre campus. The university offers a range of  academic programs and a diverse, inclusive culture to students from around the globe.

The large-scale audio video project is part of the university’s second phase, covering 22 buildings on campus, including 29 classrooms, 20 conference rooms, and a visitor center. DKU set its sights on a number of top global brands. In the end, the Sennheiser TCC 2 ceiling array microphone stood out due to its superior audio technology, open technology path and rich success experience. DKU chose to install a total of 116 TCC 2s so that every space can enjoy the trusted Sennheiser audio quality.

The Sennheiser TCC 2 Solution

DKU offers courses taught by faculty from Duke University in the U.S. as well as other locations around the world. As a result, the university requires each classroom to provide an online learning experience as if it were face-to-face. Audio equipment, in particular, not only needs to be clear in sound quality, stable in transmission, and easy to operate, but it also needs to fit seamlessly into different room types and teaching scenarios.

The TCC 2 utilizes patented Dynamic Beamforming technology, which automatically tracks the position of speakers and switches between speakers in real time, ensuring that their voices are clearly captured. Teachers are able to move around and communicate freely with students while teaching, and the layout of desks and chairs in the classroom can be flexibly adjusted to enhance the classroom experience. According to Sennheiser, the microphone’s built-in 28 broadcast-quality microphone heads make the sound clear and natural, and remote teachers and students can also listen to the speakers clearly as if they were in the room/

In addition to classrooms, schools also place a high value on the design of audio systems in conference rooms. In teleconferencing, the seamless integration of audio and video is very important. In this project, TCC 2 integrates Biamp DSP and Sony PTZ camera tracking to synchronize the monitored speaker’s position to the camera, thus realizing real-time switching of the speaker’s footage, which makes the meeting more realistic, efficient and immersive.

Visitor Center Acoustics

The Visitor Center is another highlight of this project. In order to provide excellent conditions for teachers and students to communicate, display and hold activities and exhibitions, the Visitor Center built by the school has a flexible layout and a bright and spacious space, with an area of 400 square meters and a height of 4.8 meters, in addition to the need for high-quality sound pickup, the site of the local sound reinforcement is also a very high demand. Three TCC 2s were installed in the Visitor Center, whose TruVoicelift acoustic enhancement feature delivers everyone’s speeches clearly to every corner, with natural, full sound quality and no distortion or delay, making for a truly immersive audio experience.

AV-over-IP Integration

The DKU Phase II project, which took three years to design and deploy and complete, was not only large in scale but complex. The project’s audiovisual system included many types of products including Biamp DSP, Bose loudspeakers and Crestron control systems. Therefore, for the success of the whole project, easy operation process and seamless integration of products of each link are crucial, which is also the main challenge of the project manager.

Wan Li is the chief engineer at DKU and the university’s technical lead for the audio system design. His team adopted an all-digital and fully distributed AV-over-IP architecture for the University. The TCC 2 can be seamlessly integrated into the campus network with all brands of audio equipment via Dante, allowing IT managers to monitor and control the communication, interaction and control of various devices on campus in real time via cell phones, tablets or computers, greatly simplifying workflows.

Sennheiser’s business communication solutions have an open audio/video ecosystem with strong compatibility and can be integrated with different brands of devices and platforms. TCC 2 has been certified by Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Tencent Conference and Nail Conference to meet the preferences and needs of all types of users.

Praise for Sennheiser’s TCC 2

During the implementation of the project, Sennheiser’s technical engineers went to the university several times to carry out on-site investigation and debugging work room-by-room to ensure that the installation position and angle of each TCC 2 could achieve the optimal effect and realize the best voice clarity. This was highly recognized by DKU staff.

“The exceptional quality of the TCC 2 is unquestionable, and the Sennheiser team has been instrumental in the smooth implementation of the project. They provided full technical and training support and helped us make great progress in commissioning and optimizing the system.” Li praised, “In the school’s future development plan, we look forward to continuing to work with Sennheiser to further optimize the performance of the audio/video facilities and continue to enhance the immersive learning and collaborative experience for teachers and students.”

Never in a million years would I have placed myself in the position that I am in today. A position that utilizes a plethora of professional and transformational technology that allows the students at Robinson Independent School District (ISD)  to not only experience how it works, but see their possible future in these industries. So often we share at arm’s length about careers and possible secondary opportunities within the technology industry. These experiences tend to lack hands-on, in the trenches learning experiences that can only be obtained with on the job practical training and education.

Enhancing Communication within the Classroom

We are very fortunate here at Robinson ISD to have educators who share the same sentiment as I do for the future of our students. One of the biggest steps we took in helping support our staff deliver their hands-on learning experiences, is ensuring their classroom communication is always clear and high quality no matter where they are in the room. Implementing classroom audio systems such as the Lightspeed Redcat in our classrooms have helped give our teachers and students a stronger voice in the classroom. Clear and concise instruction can help students achieve higher learning outcomes because they know exactly what is expected of them. We have virtually eliminated the need for teachers to raise their voice for redirecting unwanted behavior and our classroom transitions have become more fluid through music ques delivered via the Redcat. Students hear their teacher no matter where they are sitting in the classroom, helping eliminate the need to constantly repeat instructions.

Presentation skills are a key part to our students’ success in communication. We have implemented the Lightspeed Sharemike during classroom student presentations, read-alouds and student teaching opportunities. Students can really find their voice and come alive during speaking opportunities when they have a mic. We know that these skills are vital for their future, so let’s give them the space and opportunity now where they can try, fail, learn and grow as much as they need to.

Embracing creativity and utilizing problem solving skills

One of my missions is to inspire the next generation of creators and innovators that are extremely competitive. In Robinson ISD, starting at our lower levels, we provide opportunities for students to stretch their problem solving skills through coding and engineering projects. Opportunities range from utilizing Lego Education as they construct the next generation of habitats to protect against severe weather events, to coding autonomous robots to better understand geometric figures through and programming drones to fly a planned out route of a shape that they are studying.

I am not a fan of the word “limit” and its negative and stifling connotation in education. Our students and teachers need to try new things as that is where true learning and growth starts. As you know, we need to build authentic relationships to ensure student success, allowing students to let their guards down and show their true passions. One of the best uses of technology that we use to do this is through audio and video content creation. We all see it on social media from our students’ personal lives, but we take it a step further and bring this creative expression into the classroom.

Through the use of Adobe Express and its Animate from Audio features, students utilize just their voice to tell us more about their dreams, passions and ambitions through animation. I get it, not all students are the “hey look at me” type when it comes to being on camera, but most just want to be heard. This provides a “you can hear me now” type of self-expression opportunity without the vulnerability that comes with being on camera.

Providing Opportunities for Technology Career Exploration

Growing up, I knew that creating something from nothing was a gift of mine. Storytelling and creativity was deep inside of me and I found that I could utilize these gifts through audio, video and technology applications. The one opportunity that was lacking in my life was real-world application practice.

Within Robinson ISD, I have been very fortunate to give students the opportunities that I did not have. I am able to provide students creative outlets for their digital creations with various audio/video production tools and resources. Utilizing Adobe products, our students produce graphics for our district communication such as Instagram Stories, Reels and Post to inform our community.

Our students help produce our district High School and Pre-K graduations each year using industry standard equipment like the NewTek TC1 Tricaster for live video switching. We use a show control graphics control board by Daktronics to share senior video and other audio/video assets that will be displayed on the field’s video board throughout the ceremony. This same equipment is used in most major sports arenas and collegiate production facilities around the globe. Students are receiving hands-on training with studio quality cameras and audio field recorders. These learning opportunities have been years in the making and we are growing our programs each year to give our students the best possible chance to be competitive in their future careers or fields of study.

I truly feel technology has always been a driving force in the educational world, providing learning opportunities and experiences that mimic and support building skills beyond the classroom. I feel that using it as a transformational vehicle to help personalize learning for our students, is one of its most powerful ways we can harness its potential in the classroom. It is up to us as educators to really dive in and place our students behind the wheel and in the driver’s seat.

Willie Thomas III, Director of Media Integration at Robinson ISD, works with K-12 students, educators, parents and district leaders to enhance the learning opportunities through the integration of instructional technology. Willie has a Master of Science focused in Instructional Technology.

Audio manufacturer Shure is launching the Microflex Advance MXA902 Integrated Conferencing Ceiling Array. The product is the first conferencing ceiling-array microphone with integrated loudspeaker and IntelliMix DSP for small and medium-size meeting rooms.

Shure’s Microflex Advance ceiling, wall and table-array microphones have been a popular choice for AV conferencing applications since 2016. The launch of the Microflex Advance MXA902 comes after Shure launched the MXA920 Ceiling Array Microphone in 2022. Now, the company is extending its Microflex Ecosystem portfolio with a new audio solution for meeting rooms. Importantly, it delivers microphone, loudspeaker and DSP technology in one device.

Microflex Advance MXA902: Complete Ceiling-Mounted Solution

In today’s work environment, IT managers and AV professionals seek reliable, easily configurable audio solutions out of the box. This enables them to efficiently transform any small to medium-sized room into an equitable meeting space. The MXA902 is a complete ceiling-mounted audio solution for AV conferencing. It’s well suited to deliver premium audio capture and reproduction, while requiring minimal setup. It offers an array microphone for enhanced directional voice capture and an integrated wide-dispersion loudspeaker for natural-sounding far-end speech. Thus, the company says, users experience a blend of excellent sound quality and streamlined deployment. Onboard IntelliMix DSP applies automatic mixing, echo cancellation, noise reduction and automatic gain control for an excellent audio mix.

Evan Groom, conferencing product manager at Shure, says most conference rooms and meeting spaces don’t address modern-day professionals’ needs. Thus, they opt to meet in spaces that best support hybrid collaboration with in-office technology that’s flexible and effective.

“We’ve recognized the depth of our customers’ needs with the MXA902,” Groom notes, adding that the solution delivers the best audio-capture and reproduction for all users in the room. “With the microphone, loudspeaker and DSP all in one device, the MXA902 helps improve the overall room design, creating a sleek and elegant meeting room without extension mics and extra wires.”

Shure Provides Seamless Collaboration

To provide a seamless collaboration experience, the MXA902 is certified for Microsoft Teams and Zoom Rooms when paired with the USB Audio Network Interface with Matrix Mixing (ANIUSB-MATRIX). Indeed, the MXA902 and ANIUSB-MATRIX have undergone testing in both lab and real-life environments.

The MXA902 is designed with Single Zone Automatic Coverage Technology, which covers a 20’x20’ space with minimal configuration needed. Thus, users can easily and automatically capture the talkers they wish to hear, while avoiding noise in other areas of the room. This feature is combined with a wide-dispersion, 2.5-inch, high-quality loudspeaker to deliver excellent sound capture and listening. Most importantly, it’s all from a single device. The MXA902 comes equipped with Shure’s onboard IntelliMix DSP. Moreover, it can leverage automatic gain control, acoustic echo cancellation, noise reduction and automatic mixing to help deliver clear, crisp sound for all in-room and remote meeting participants.

MXA902 Suits IT Managers, AV Professionals

Shure built the MXA902 for IT managers and AV professionals of all experience levels. Therefore, it suits anyone looking for an installation-friendly Microflex Ecosystem solution for small to medium collaboration spaces. The MXA902 is further compatible with MXA900 series accessory kits. This, of course, delivers a simplified mounting system that works with a variety of ceiling types. These include in-ceiling, on-ceiling, pole or wire rope. A sleek, white (and paintable) industrial design fits most architectural needs of today’s meeting rooms, so installers don’t have to worry about making additional cosmetic changes.

The Sennheiser EW-DX family of radio microphones are designed to simplify professional workflows and make wireless audio a breeze, and the products fit the bill, allowing any non-audio professional to deploy and use this advanced audio technology.

Ideal for live performances, rental companies, theatres, boardrooms, lecture halls, presentations, houses of worship or broadcasting, the EW-DX is a truly versatile and easy-to-use system. The product is an evolution of Sennheiser’s EW G4 series, but offers the lowest latency on the market at 1.9 milliseconds, the company claims.

Simplicity and versatility

Essentially, everything about Sennheiser’s EW-DX makes setup and use easy, especially for those unfamiliar with audio systems. All it took to test it out was to plug it in, connect it to PA head and switch the handheld receiver on. An Auto Scan button automatically assigns channels using an equidistant tuning grid that allows users to pack more channels more reliably, without intermodulation interference.

The German audio manufacturer is known for its audio quality, and that professional-grade audio is essentially a given in any Sennheiser product. As such, the handheld transmitter immediately became the best-sounding microphone I have ever used.

For IT professionals tasked with provisioning and deploying audio equipment and microphones for boardrooms or lecture halls, the EW-DX may be perfect, as it includes an Auto Scan function to help users find good frequencies for the receiver or multiple networked receivers.

Sennheiser also designed the EW-DX to be scalable, giving organizations multiple hardware options, including 2-channel half-rack (9,5″) or 4-channel full-rack (19″) receivers, while giving organizations the ability to expand if need be.

Transmitters are synced via Bluetooth Low Energy, and no line of sight is required.

The receiver is fitted with a headphone output and volume control, both balanced XLR and unbalanced 6.3mm analogue outputs, and an RJ 45 port for Power over Ethernet and integration into control and monitoring networks.

The EW-DX line includes a bodypack transmitter, the ED-DX SK 3-PIN, that seems to be perfect for speakers that want to have their hands free via a clip-on or headset mic without sacrificing audio quality.

Manageability and control

IT professionals will be happy to know that the EW-DX includes Dante networked audio, Ethernet control ports and AES-256 encryption that allows the system to be securely transmitted and placed on IT networks.

Setting it up in a corporate meeting space or lecture hall is seamless, and managing it is just as simple with tools like Sennheiser’s Control Cockpit, Wireless Systems Manager and Smart Assist app.

The company’s Smart Assist mobile app or advanced software like its Wireless Systems Manager and Control Cockpit give organizations even more visibility and control in complex, networked environments.

The company markets the EW-DX as its most versatile digital wireless system, with broad applicability across high education campuses, corporate meeting spaces, or live performance venues. Based on our review, we’d say that marketing language is entirely accurate.

Other features the app provides includes preset playlist schedules, set administrator permissions, delegate access to trusted employees and access on-demand premium support from anywhere.
  • Set the perfect brand tone: According to the company, businesses can access its Sonos Backgrounds, a commercially licensed music service that features a range of music from independent artists, as well as quick access third-party streaming services like Mood Mix, Soundtrack Your Brand or Rockbot to create a consistent brand experience and engage customers at every location.
  • Experience the best sound in business: Sonos says Sonos Pro enables businesses to fill each location with quality sound that’s driven by thoughtful hardware design and intuitive control.
  • Customize and scale systems: Users of the new commercial platform can outfit their business locations with a few compact speakers or a mix of smart speakers and components across multiple locations. In addition, the company points out that as businesses grow, users can expand their systems with more speakers and adjust their subscription plans.

The town of Kolding, Denmark, is home to Sonic College. The college is famous for its innovative approaches to audio design and instruction. Here, students learn how to shape audio production for films, gaming, music, podcasting and more. When the college built a new facility, the staff implemented Audinate’s Dante transport protocol. The team thus routed all audio throughout the building.

According to the team, it appeared to be no small undertaking. Here, staff had to interconnect many spaces. This included multiple stereo studios and their companion mastering suites, a foley stage, and immersive recording studio, Dolby Atmos mastering suite and theatrical mix stage. It also had to connect a colossal 187-channel, AVB-based Meyer Sound Spacemap Go spatial sound system located in the five-story atrium. And all via Dante (with a little help from AVB-to-Dante conversion cards).

Easy, Flexible Routing

Lars Tirsbæk, a lecturer at Sonic College, became instrumental in setting up the new facility. He also helped deciding what spaces would be most beneficial to students and essential to delivering a good grounding in sound design. “[Building the new facility] was an opportunity to start from scratch,” he says. “Our infrastructure needed to not only fit the demands of the space(s). [It] also [had to] provide learning opportunities for our students and give them practical experience working with real-world technologies like Dante.”

“We didn’t have the Dante network in our old facility,” says Tirsbæk. He then counts off a long list of benefits. “Now you can do a mix then easily route it through to the cinema to listen. You can take a stage box anywhere in the building and still communicate back to the control room.”

Using Dante Domain Manager

Dante Domain Manager allows college staff to manage the large Dante network effectively. With its granular user access control levels, administrators can lock down certain network areas and functionality. At the same time, it still allows students room to experiment within boundaries set by teaching staff and network managers. In this type of educational environment, segmenting domains emerged as a critical feature.

“Students definitely need to know how audio-over-IP works. That’s the way all audio infrastructure will be implemented in the coming years,” Tirsbæk comments. “When our students learn to use Dante, they recognize the inherent flexibility of being able to just move AV hardware around without affecting the network.”

A range of spaces and studios offer students the perfect sonic playground complete with cutting-edge products. As a result, they have a hands-on experience with the top AV, broadcast and studio tools and technologies in commercial use.

“This was a complex project,” says Tirsbæk. “With so many adjacent studios and performance spaces, we had to consider how to isolate parts of the network to prevent unexpected issues from occurring during live performances. Dante Domain Manager’s user authentication and role definition, in combination with its ability to create separate Dante Domains, was essential to our success in managing such an intricate system. In fact, I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t have [had success] had it not been for Dante Domain Manager.”

AtlasIED, the Phoenix, Ariz.-based global electronics manufacturer of audio, mass communications and soundmasking solutions, announced several new products for its Atmosphere audio processing and control platform. These include two combined signal processor and amplification products, the Atmosphere AZMP4 (4-zone) and AZMP8 (8-zone), and the Atmosphere X-ZPS, an advanced multi-zone paging station accessory. Additionally, AtlasIED is now offering Atmosphere 3.0, a software update for the Atmosphere platform.

Engineered with automation, artificial intelligence and touchless control, Atmosphere combines digital audio processors, amplifiers, graphical user interfaces, programming software and controls to set a new operational and performance standard for digital audio systems.

Designed to be simple to install and easy to operate, the platform offers the modularity, scalability, and quality performance required to support the audio needs of a wide range of commercial applications, including restaurants, bars, hotels, school campuses, houses of worship and retail establishments.

“The introduction of these new hardware products and the latest software represent another important milestone and highlights the continued innovation of the Atmosphere platform,” says Tom Lureman, director of product management at AtlasIED. “The Atmosphere platform has transformed the way our customers integrate audio into a variety of environments, like hospitality. These latest products bring even more capabilities and value to support their clients’ needs.”

Audio Processing and Amplification in One

Building upon the foundation of the Atmosphere AZM series of signal processors, the new Atmosphere AZMP4 (4-zone) and AZMP8 (8-zone) add built-in premium amplification to help customers consolidate products in an audio rack and streamline system integration.

The AZMP4 is powered by a single 600W 4-channel amplifier module while the AZMP8 provides 1200W of total power. Any AZMP4 or AZMP8 individual channel can be software configured to provide different wattages. For example, if a restaurant has several zones but one has more speakers, an installer can use the AZMP to divide the power to better suit a zone with more or less speakers.

Multi-zone Paging Station Accessory

AtlasIED X-ZPS gooseneck microphoneAtlasIED also unveiled the Atmosphere X-ZPS, an advanced multi-zone paging station accessory natively compatible with AtliasIED AZM and AZMP processors. Like all Atmosphere accessories, the X-ZPS is plug-and-play using CAT5e cable and daisy-chainable with other accessories up to 1,000 feet. With a 4.3-inch touchscreen display for easy Zone, Group, or All Call paging using the included premium gooseneck microphone, it can also be configured as a full Atmosphere system controller with access to features including zone volume, source select, message recall, scene select and bell schedule.

Atmosphere 3.0

AtlasIED also launched its latest major software update for the Atmosphere platform, Atmosphere 3.0. Available for AtlasIED AZM audio processors and the new AZMP combination audio processors with built-in amplifiers, the Atmosphere 3.0 update builds upon the embedded intelligence for the system, now allowing for continuous monitoring and supervision of system health and performance.

A new Self-Test feature measures system performance over time and provides notifications of any degradation of loudspeaker load. Additionally, Atmosphere 3.0, introduces soundmasking as another feature of this powerful platform. Used in corporate, healthcare/ clinical, and other settings, sound masking helps cover speech for enhanced speech privacy and reduce distracting office noise for increased focus and productivity.

The Atmosphere AZMP8, AZMP4, X-ZPS, and the 3.0 software will be available in early 2023. The Atmosphere 3.0 software update can be downloaded when released.
