Nureva Inc., provider of advanced audio conferencing solutions, announced its support for the Higher Education Technology Managers Alliance (HETMA) as an Annual Platinum Partner. A 501(c)(3) advocacy organization, HETMA focuses on expanding and enhancing the higher education audiovisual sector by connecting the community to strengthen the collective mission and impact of the broader AV/IT industry.

As a platinum partner, Nureva says it can more broadly introduce its audio conferencing systems that deliver the simplicity and value essential for larger classrooms. Per a statement, the company’s products are increasingly chosen by prestigious higher education institutions throughout the United States. These include Harvard Medical School, Georgetown University, Penn State University, The University of Arizona, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California, Berkeley.

Support for Higher Education

Powered by revolutionary Microphone Mist technology, Nureva adds that its audio systems offer adaptability for both HyFlex and hybrid learning environments, without the cost and complexity of a traditional system. Here, thousands of virtual microphones fill larger classrooms and meeting rooms to pick up voices in every inch of the space, and in-room voice amplification means students will hear clearly — whether they’re in the classroom or participating remotely.

According to Nureva, its products incorporate many features specifically designed to address the needs of higher education technology managers. For instance, it includes autocalibration, which means IT teams can be assured that when rooms are rearranged to accommodate various classes, the audio simply adjusts. Nureva’s camera zones feature for the HDL410 system also keeps hybrid classes engaging by using sound location data to enable automated multi-camera switching in larger classrooms without any additional software or specialized technical expertise.

Nureva Inc., the Alberta, Canada-based  innovator of IT-first audioconferencing solutions, announced that its HDL300 and Dual HDL300 audioconferencing systems now integrate with Extron control and automation solutions to deliver camera-tracking features that support hybrid working and learning. Extron used Nureva’s sound-location device API, available through Nureva Developer Toolkit, to update the Extron Control Systems Driver. .

The supplied audio-location data leverages Nureva’s patented Microphone Mist technology, which fills a room with thousands of virtual microphones so everyone can be heard everywhere in a space. Sound direction, location and level are reported several times per second to enable automatic camera adjustments based on the location of the active speakers. According to Nureva, this results in more refined camera positioning and switching and a better experience for remote participants.

Hundreds of cameras by leading manufacturers integrate the use of preset recalls with the Extron control processor. With the launch of this integration, Nureva HDL300 and Dual HDL300 audio systems can supply voice-tracking data to any of those cameras with the simple installation of the Extron driver. Nureva Inc., the Alberta, Canada-based innovator of advanced audio conferencing solutions, announced the HDL310 system. Per the company, the HDL310 is the latest addition to its lineup of audioconferencing systems.

The new all-in-one sound bar simplifies the task of getting great audio in spaces up to 30 ft x 30 ft. Moreover, it offers 44% more coverage area than its flagship HDL300 system. According to Nureva, this is possible due to implementation of its patented Microphone Mist technology.

Combining a single Nureva microphone and speaker bar with a new connect module, the HDL310 system thus delivers pro AV performance in a plug-and-play, IT-friendly solution that is easy to install, set up and manage at scale. Like the HDL410, the HDL310 system comes with Console Direct. With this, it helps provide a secure and continuous connection between the HDL310 and Nureva Console. It thus allows IT staff to manage systems remotely without having to rely on an in-room, computer-running client software.

Like all Nureva systems, the HDL310 includes a two-year subscription to Nureva Pro. This service is a value-added service to keep meeting rooms and classrooms functioning smoothly. It also includes expanded support hours, advance hardware replacement and additional features in Nureva Console. This includes device-status monitoring with email alerts and enhanced room analytics with historical data.

Additional Features

Third-party companies that want to integrate their products with Nureva audio systems can also access and leverage APIs from the Nureva Developer Toolkit. Specific to higher-education classrooms and corporate-training rooms, the HDL310 and HDL410 systems include a feature within Nureva’s Voice Amplification Mode. This mode lets users mute their audience to focus microphone pickup on the presenter’s or instructor’s voice. At the same time, it reduces all other microphone pickup in the space.

Nureva notes that it is at the forefront of delivering innovative, IT-friendly audio systems that are easy to deploy and manage at scale. Like all Nureva audio systems, the HDL310 connects easily by USB and can be installed and operational in under an hour with no DSP required. Not only does Microphone Mist technology fill a room with thousands of virtual microphones; it also handles various other factors. This includes continuous autocalibration, echo cancellation, noise reduction, position-based gain control and the challenges of multiple in-room participants speaking at once.

The approach is thus ideally suitable for the evolving needs of IT professionals. Especially as they reimagine their spaces to address the demand for better remote collaboration experiences.

Nureva adds that its audio systems integrate with leading UC&C applications. Here, the HDL310 is currently in the certification process for Microsoft Teams. HDL300 and Dual HDL300 customers can also upgrade their systems to HDL310 and HDL410 systems. They can do so with the purchase of the Connect Module 2 upgrade kit when the HDL310 system ships in May 2023.

“Response to our HDL410 system has been outstanding. And we’re excited to expand our next-generation audio systems into mid-size spaces,” says Nancy Knowlton, Nureva’s CEO. “The HDL310 system delivers the unique combination of IT-friendly simplicity and uncompromised performance that our customers are asking for.”

Nureva Inc., the Calgary, Alberta Canada-based provider of advanced audio conferencing solutions announced the HDL410 system, marking the first of a new generation of Nureva audio conferencing systems designed to further simplify the task of getting great audio in larger hybrid spaces.

The HDL410 system combines two Nureva microphone and speaker bars with a new connect module, powered by the company’s Microphone Mist technology and a new unified coverage map to deliver pro audio performance in extra-large working and learning spaces up to 35′ x 55′ (10. 7 x 16.8 m). The unified coverage map enables the two microphone and speaker bars to act is if they were a single device with a single coverage map that spans the entire space. This greatly improves audio performance and sound location data accuracy for camera switching and steering, while avoiding the complications and performance challenges of systems that require manual setup and complex processing to stitch together overlapping coverage areas from multiple ceiling microphones.

A new Console Direct feature provides a secure and continuous connection between the HDL410 and Nureva Console, allowing IT managers to manage the HDL410 remotely without having to rely on an in-room computer running client software. Users get access to remotely install firmware updates, check device status, view analytics and historical data, change settings, access APIs from the Nureva Developer Toolkit and more.

Also new to the HDL410 is an audience mute feature within Nureva’s Voice Amplification Mode, which can focus microphone pickup on the presenter or instructor’s voice while reducing all other microphone pickup in the space.

Nureva HDL410 Audio Conferencing System Designed for Easy Deployment & Management for IT

The continued shift to hybrid environments has put a strain on IT resources to meet new and growing needs in collaboration spaces of all sizes, requiring solutions that dramatically improve the experience of remote participants. For audio in larger spaces, this challenge is amplified by the higher cost and complexity of designing, installing and managing traditional pro AV solutions.

Nureva says it’s at the forefront of finding innovative, IT-friendly ways to meet these challenges with intelligent audio systems that are easy to deploy and manage. The HDL410 connects easily by USB and can be installed and operational in about an hour, with no DSP required, simple bar mounting on the wall via 2-screws and continuous autocalibration. Microphone Mist technology handles echo cancellation, noise reduction, position-based gain control and the challenges of multiple in-room participants speaking at once. Nureva audio systems integrate with UC&C platforms including Microsoft Teams and Zoom, and the HDL410 is currently in the certification process for Microsoft Teams, which would make it the first microphone and speaker bar certified for extra-large Microsoft Teams Rooms.

“Today’s IT leaders are asking for intelligent solutions that deliver the collaboration experience their users demand without putting a strain on IT resources,” says Nancy Knowlton, Nureva’s CEO. “The Nureva HDL410 system is our latest and most dramatic example of using our IT-first approach to innovation to deliver great audio in large spaces.”

Nureva will debut and demonstrate the HDL410 system at EDUCAUSE in Denver, Colorado, October 25–28, 2022, and Zoomtopia in San Jose, California, November 8–9, 2022.

Nureva Inc., the Calgary, Canada-based provider of audioconferencing solutions, announced it now enables camera tracking with accurate sound location data for third-party camera integrations. Enabled by Nureva’s patented Microphone Mist technology, which fills a room with thousands of virtual microphones, the new sound location device API streams data that identifies where people are talking within a room to steer and switch cameras so that remote participants can more easily follow conversations and see who is speaking.

The new solution is ideal for larger rooms that may have a greater number of participants, such as a higher education classroom or a large meeting room or boardroom. Unlike typical microphone systems that depend on mapping areas to camera presets and provide only sound-source directional data or target unwanted sound sources such as HVAC fans, a wall speaker and even sound reflections from a window, Nureva uses virtual microphones as pickup points to accurately locate sound sources.

Nureva’s Microphone Mist technology’s advanced processing power filters out undesirable sounds that make it difficult for remote participants to follow the presenter. Using Nureva’s API, camera companies have easy access to accurate sound direction, location and level from the Nureva audio system being used. Sound locations are reported several times per second to enable automatic camera adjustments based on the location of the active speaker or the need to switch focus between multiple speakers.

Available through the Nureva Developer Toolkit, the sound location device API was created as part of a program to work with leading camera companies on integrating their PTZ cameras with Nureva audio systems to offer customers a better audio and video experience. Integrations are currently underway with AVer and Lumens, among other camera companies.

Earlier in 2022, cloud-based monitoring of any USB-connected third-party camera was added to Nureva Console, making it easy for IT staff to remotely monitor cameras and ensure they are functioning properly in meeting rooms and classrooms.

“The use of Microphone Mist technology to enable camera tracking is a breakthrough that opens up many exciting possibilities for the capture and use of sound location data,” says Nancy Knowlton, Nureva’s CEO. “We’re excited to work with leading camera manufacturers to enable this functionality and deliver the kind of integrated audio and video experience that customers are asking for.”

Microphone Mist Technology vs. Beamforming

Many traditional audio systems use beamforming microphone technology, which picks up all sounds that occur within directional beams emanating from the microphone array. This directional approach limits the degree to which precise sound locations can be identified and creates a challenge in distinguishing desirable (a person talking) and undesirable (paper rustling) sounds within a beam. These issues limit the accuracy with which sound location data can be used for camera tracking.

Microphone Mist technology avoids these issues by filling a space with thousands of pickup points that act as individual microphones. This creates the opportunity to pinpoint sound locations more accurately while distinguishing between desirable and undesirable sounds more precisely.

Availability and Pricing

Nureva’s sound location device API is available through Nureva Developer Toolkit at no additional cost for Nureva customers.

InfoComm, the largest professional audiovisual trade show in the U.S., is returning to the Las Vegas Convention Center next week, with hundreds of technology vendors showcasing their latest conferencing and collaboration solutions, as well as innovative display and audio technologies.

While the show has historically catered to the professional audiovisual (AV) industry and AV integrators, the show has recently been making more of an effort to appeal to end users and IT professionals, who are ultimately the end customer of these solutions and services being showcased.

IT professionals not familiar with AV equipment and standards are now being forced to support their organizations’ remote and hybrid work needs, and InfoComm is one place where IT and their end users can go to learn more about the newest innovations in the conferencing and collaboration space, says David Labuskes, CEO of pro AV trade association AVIXA, which owns and operates the InfoComm show.

“The DNA of AVIXA and all of the exhibitors at InfoComm is the application of technology to connect people to people, and the professionals that are having to learn this on the fly and respond and react have a home in AVIXA and have an enormous resource in InfoComm’s education and the show itself,” Labuskes says.

InfoComm’s learning opportunities for IT professionals

InfoComm 2022 has 22 sessions that are “focused on the world of IT and networked AV,” Labuskes says, with topics including AV-over-IP, network security, cloud infrastructure, HDBaseT technology and even a panel session focused on the point of view of IT and end users.

Other sessions will explore cybersecurity implications for IoT, AV and workplace technology in enterprise environments, while a three-day course on networked AV systems will explore the impacts of AV systems on networks.

While the InfoComm show is becoming more IT friendly, Labuskes says AVIXA has been “tailoring its messaging and training to the IT audience for some time,” with newsletters focused specifically on conferencing and collaboration, training courses for AV-over-IP technologies and more.

Presenting that information to AV professionals oftentimes introduces them to IT standards and protocols, but AVIXA is hoping to also do the inverse.

InfoComm provides IT professionals the opportunity to learn more about AV technologies from other technologists that “speak a dialect” of their techie language, Labuskes says.

“The key is not to necessarily take a network engineer and turn them into an AV professional, or take an AV professional and turn them into a network engineer,” he says. “The key is to have them interact with each other and discover the expertise that each of them brings to solving the problems that are faced in today’s enterprises.”

Engage with vendors and solution providers

In addition to educating IT and end users on the newest AV technologies, the vendors themselves gain valuable insight into what their actual end customers need to do their jobs effectively, Labuskes says.

“There’s real impact on product roadmaps that comes out of participating in an even like this—not only from a lead gen and sales promotion, but also from conversations with end users,” Labuskes says.

Notable exhibitors showcasing conferencing and collaboration solutions that might be familiar to IT professionals include HP, Intel, Logitech, Cisco, Sennheiser, Zoom, AVI-SPL, AVI Systems, Dell, DTEN, Lenovo, Nureva, Crestron, Poly, Pexip, QSC, Shure, Utelogy and many more.

Founded in 1878, Duquesne is consistently ranked among the nation’s top Catholic universities for its award-winning faculty and tradition of academic excellence. Duquesne, a campus of nearly 9,500 graduate and undergraduate students, has been nationally recognized for its academic programs, community service and commitment to sustainability.

The Tech Decision

The university recently outfitted more than 40 classrooms audio conferencing systems, and an additional 32 systems have been ordered.

SMARTSolution Technologies, an authorized Nureva dealer, supported the university in its search for an audio conferencing system to help students learn in a hybrid environment, where some students are in the classroom and others are participating in remote learning.

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, Duquesne was using several Nureva systems they purchased in late 2019 and early 2020. Once the need to shift to a hybrid learning model became apparent, the university installed another 37 units specifically for those classrooms.

The University Audio Solution

Duquesne’s COVID-19 Master Plan reflects safety measures and protocols that the university has taken to create a structured campus environment that allows for face-to-face and hybrid classes, adapted living conditions and other necessary changes, while making it possible for students to be on Duquesne’s campus and earn a high-quality education.

Since August 2019, prior to COVID-19, academic affairs – which includes faculty and technology teams – has been working to create HyFlex, an educational experience that provides students with both in-class and remote instruction during the fall semester.

The HDL300 systems are powered by Nureva’s breakthrough Microphone Mist technology, which provides the full-room microphone coverage needed to accommodate the Master Plan’s physical distancing-requirements and ensure remote students can hear every word and feel engaged in the class.

For professors and lecturers, lapel and podium mics are never needed, giving them freedom from the constraints and potential complications of conventional audio-conferencing solutions. And for IT and AV support staff, the system’s continuous autocalibration provides optimal performance no matter how the classroom is configured or how many times the configuration changes.

The Impact

“Nureva systems are the perfect solution to accommodate the classroom audio requirements brought on by COVID-19,” says Mitchell Schwartz, SMARTSolution’s CEO.

“We were happy to help Duquesne University fulfill that component of their Master Plan.”

“We are thrilled that our audio systems are helping remote students at Duquesne receive the same quality of education as the in-classroom students receive,” said Nancy Knowlton, Nureva’s CEO.

“This is a new way of teaching and learning for most universities, and we are delighted that Duquesne continues to deploy our systems across the university.”

Duquesne University is one of a growing number of postsecondary institutions globally that are broadly deploying Nureva audio systems to meet the needs of hybrid learning models.

Nureva audio systems enable these institutions to continue providing a high-quality education to students by delivering advanced full-room audio coverage in classrooms and lecture halls.

In-room participants can make full use of their space, and remote students can fully engage and feel like they are in the room with classmates.

Duquesne University recently outfitted more than 40 classrooms with Nureva HDL300 audio conferencing systems and an additional 32 systems have been ordered.

SMARTSolution Technologies, an authorized Nureva dealer, supported the university in its search for an audio conferencing system to help students learn in a hybrid environment, where some students are in the classroom and others are participating in remote learning.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Duquesne was using several Nureva systems they purchased in late 2019 and early 2020. Once the need to shift to a hybrid learning model became apparent, the university installed another 37 units specifically for those classrooms.

Most recently, Duquesne installed a Dual HDL300 system in a mock courtroom at the School of Law. An additional 32 units have been ordered, with plans for a campus-wide implementation of Nureva audio systems. Classroom technology specialists set up all the wall-mounted units themselves.

Since August 2019, the Duquesne academic affairs department – which includes faculty and technology teams – has been working to create HyFlex, an educational experience that provides students with both in-class and remote instruction during the fall semester.
