By the end of the year, more than half of knowledge workers worldwide are expected to be working remotely, according to a Gartner study.
“A hybrid workforce is the future of the work, with both remote and on-site part of the same solution to optimize employers’ workforce needs,” said Ranjit Atwal, senior research director at Gartner, in a statement.

Globally, remote work varies based on IT adoption, culture, and industry. By 2022, 31% of knowledge workers will be remote (a mix of hybrid and fully remote), Gartner said.
Gartner defines knowledge workers as those who are in knowledge intensive fields, such as accounting, engineers, or writers.
Gartner predicts the U.S. will lead in the number of remote workers by the end next year, who will account for more than half of the workforce. India and China are also projected to produce some of the largest number of remote workers.
In Europe, remote workers will represent 52% of the workforce; workers in Germany and France are expected to account for 37% and 33%.
“Through 2024, organizations will be forced to bring forward digital business transformation plans by at least five years. Those plans will have to adapt to a post-COVID-19 world that involves permanently higher adoption of remote work and digital touchpoints,” Atwal said.
As a result of a global shift in remote workers, expect to see an increase demand in PC and tablets across both business and consumer markets.
To support the rise in remote workers, companies need to start thinking strategically about their remote-first technology implementations well into the future. The need for remote collaboration tools is important more now than it was ever before.
