How Ransomware attackers typically operate
Microsoft has published a lengthy blog detailing a recent ransomware incident and the tools and techniques the attacker used. The incident, which follows a typical ransomware attacker’s playbook, details how hackers use IT’s own tools against them and gain access to the network long before deploying ransomware.
The blog also includes recommended detections and defense techniques organizations can use to increase protection against ransomware.

Ransomware up 466% since 2019
A new report from Ivanti, Cyber Security Works and Cyware found that ransomware has exploded since 2019, increased by nearly 470%. Ransomware groups are growing in volume and sophistication, with groups leveraging 35 vulnerabilities in the first three quarters of 2022. There are 170 known ransomware families, including 10 newcomers: Black Basta, Hive, BianLian, BlueSky, Play, Deadbolt, H0lyGh0st, Lorenz, Maui, and NamPoHyu.
The report also revealed that CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog is missing 124 vulnerabilities often used by ransomware groups.
Google introduces Working Location feature in Workspace
Google Workspace admins now have access to a new tool, Working Location, designed to give admins and colleagues better context for location planning, meeting room management, preparing meetings for virtual and in-room attendees, and more.
Google says the setting adds a customizable banner to users’ Calendar either encouraging or requiring them to set up their working location. The feature is available for Google Workspace Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, Education Standard, and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, as well as legacy G Suite Business customers.

Windows Terminal is the default command line experience in Windows 11
Microsoft has announced that it has followed through on its goal to make Windows 11 the default command line experience, and all command line applications will now open automatically in Windows Terminal on machines with Windows 11 22H2 installed.
