Authentication security key manufacturer Yubico has launched the latest version of its iOS mobile application which now extends support for near field communication to deliver tap-and-go flexibility and authentication over a Lighting connection.
The company said the new app – v. 1.1 – now works with all major desktop and mobile platforms, including full support for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
In a news release, Yubico cited the increasing adoption of two-factor authentication and time-based one-time passcode (TOTP) authenticator applications due to the rise of phishing attacks and credential theft.
However, two-factor authentication and TOTP authentication applications still come with some security and portability issues.
Yubico says its authenticator and security keys solve those issues as they stores user credentials on the hardware-based YubiKey rather than the mobile device to offer additional layers of security and convenience since the TOTP codes can be used between phones, tablets and computers.
“The Yubico Authenticator is an amazing companion app to the YubiKey, now fully functional and available across all major platforms,” said Guido Appenzeller, Yubico’s chief product officer. “It is a powerful tool in a user’s 2FA arsenal, and extends the benefits of hardware-backed authentication to an exponential amount of services. Users now have the option to secure accounts that don’t offer native security key support, delivering even better YubiKey security.”

The Yubico Authenticator is compatible with any application or service that offers existing support for other TOTP authentication apps like Authy, Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
In addition to the Yubikey 4 Series and YubiKey NEO devices, the Authenticator is now compatible with the multi-protocol YubiKey 5 Series.
The company in August released the YubiKey 5Ci, the first security key that iPhone users can plug into their Lightning port or a USB-C port.
The app can be found on the Apple Store or Google Play.
