The coronavirus pandemic, if anything, is showing us that remote work is a lot easier and less of a daunting proposition than we originally thought.
Almost overnight in March, organizations quickly adapted a remote work policy to comply with social distancing guidelines to help prevent the spread of the virus. For many organizations, that transition was fairly easy.
Now, companies are making investments in the cloud and unified communications and collaboration solutions that can help mimic that in-office experience and keep the wheels moving.
That same technology will help your organization expand your recruitment strategies far beyond the self-imposed geographic limits that come with on-site work.
A wider talent pool
Especially for organizations not near large cities, universities and major population centers, remote or hybrid work allows companies to expand their search for qualified candidates to the entire country – or even the entire world if different time zones aren’t an issue.
Companies located in the Midwest or other rural areas of the country could feasibly recruit employees from major metropolitan areas with leading educational institutions like California and the Northeast. That gives these companies access to entry-level workers coming out of some of the best colleges and universities in the world.

A more diverse talent pool
It’s been statistically proven that more diversity in your organization – especially in upper management and the C-suite – will foster more innovation. In turn, that should lead to better financial performance.
If you’re stuck in a non-diverse part of the country, you can use this opportunity to recruit people of color and women in other areas to bring more diversity and culture into your organization.
Competition for top talent
If your company is based in one of these rural areas with little access to colleges and universities, you’ve probably been frustrated by your inability to attract top talent and watch those employees instead go to some of the largest firms in your industry.
Recent studies from IBM, Gallup and Gartner suggest that over half of U.S. workers want remote work to be permanent. If you fully embrace remote work, you can reach out to those workers and give your company a competitive edge over the titans of industry.
