Open-source password manager Bitwarden is launching the general availability of Bitwarden Passwordless.dev, a developer toolkit with an API for integrating FIDO2 WebAuthn-based passkeys into consumer websites and enterprise applications.
Bitwarden’s release comes as tech firms are investing heavily in passwordless technologies in the hopes that it will essentially eliminate a major vector of cyberattacks and render typical credential-based phishing campaigns useless.
However, Bitwarden’s own research into passwordless technologies finds that half of IT decision makers say they have yet to adopt passwordless tools because their enterprise applications are not designed for it.
Bitwarden Passwordless.dev is designed to address that gap, as it is presented as an easier way to bring passkey-based authentication to individuals and organizations with just a few lines of code, allowing developers to create passworldess authentication experiences quickly and make passkey deployment easier.
To help simplify administration, BItwarden Passwordless.dev includes an admin console for developers to configure applications, manage user attributes, gain insight into passkey usage, deploy code and deploy quickly, the company says.
The general availability comes after Bitwarden acquired Passwordless.dev in January to help give companies a turnkey solution built on the FIDO2 and WebAuthn standards. Bitwarden then launched the Bitwarden Passwordless.dev beta program to give enterprises, developers and security professionals the opportunity to test the solution.
This adds to Bitwarden’s current passwordless solutions, including biometric logins and security keys.
“Passwordless authentication is rapidly gaining traction because it offers a more secure and streamlined way for users to log into websites and applications,” says Michael Crandell, CEO of Bitwarden. “Bitwarden empowers developers with the flexibility and tools they need to implement passkey-based authentication quickly and easily, ultimately enabling better user experiences while maintaining the highest levels of security.”
