According to Jose Dominguez, cybersecurity is slowly entering into colleges’ scopes for funding and increasing protection.
This often means that college IT staff are on their own when it comes to strengthening their cybersecurity initiatives.
Dominguez said that colleges should know who their enemies are when it comes to keeping their networks safe, and to know what they are up against.
“It used to be that cybersecurity was an afterthought,” said Dominguez, Network Architect at the University of Oregon. “Everything is changing nowadays, even companies and manufacturers are thinking about cybersecurity. Universities are thinking about cybersecurity.”
IT staff from colleges across the country attended Dominguez’s discussion on cybersecurity.
Dominguez was joined by other IT staff at the annual ACUTA conference to collaborate ways through which colleges can boost cybersecurity on campus, and developed these 14 questions to ask while evaluating cybersecurity initiatives:
1) How is your college creating cybersecurity awareness?
Some colleges take creating awareness seriously. For example, Illinois State University declared October as “Cybersecurity Awareness Month,” which entails sending quizzes to students to increase their knowledge of cybersecurity risks and solutions.
2) How does your college develop metrics to justify cybersecurity measurement requests?
3) What is your college using for cybersecurity tools?
4) Has your college established a risk baseline? What information is your college willing to risk if it doesn’t invest in cybersecurity solutions?
