Cypress, Calif.-based Christie has launched a new Griffyn Series projector: the Christie Griffyn 4K35-RGB pure laser 3DLP projector. The Griffyn 4K35-RGB is one of the smallest and lightest high-brightness RGB pure laser projectors in Christie’s product lineup. The projector is capable of delivering 36,500 lumens in an all-in-one compact design, weighing 179 lbs.

Designed for large-scale venues and applications including live events, projection mapping and theme parks, the latest laser projector can operate as low as 44dBA in quiet mode. Coupled with RGB pure laser illumination, which produces greater than 98% of the Rec.2020 color space, colors are rich and true to life. As a result, Christie says, audiences are immersed in vivid, bright visuals, without distraction.

“The new Griffyn 4K35-RGB pure laser projector features our latest advancements including TruLife+ electronics, which eliminates the hassle of removable options cards with ‘all-in’ connectivity,” Joel St-Denis, director of product management, Christie, says. “And with electronic color convergence (ECC), convergence can be adjusted via the remote for perfect color alignment.” Additionally, the Griffyn 4K35-RGB can operate on single-phase 200-240 VAC at full brightness, or 100-120 VAC at a reduced brightness, increasing the operational life of the projector.

Griffyn 4K35-RGB features integrated Christie Twist for warping and blending and is compatible with Christie Mystique, Christie’s automated camera-based alignment and recalibration solution to quickly install, align, calibrate and maintain multi-projection systems, removing hours of painstaking work.

For applications that require higher frame rates, including themed attractions, optional Mirage and Mirage Pro upgrades offer 120Hz at 4K resolution or up to 480Hz at 2K resolution, respectively.

The Christie Griffyn 4K35-RGB is available for order now.

Projectors for the office can be an affordable and efficient way of displaying information, media, presentations, educational material and interactive, immersive content.

New advancements in laser projection has allowed educators, businessmen and entertainment venues to create visually appealing and immersive experiences. The technology has come a long way since the old-fashioned overheard projectors used in classrooms in the 20th century.

Now projectors for offices are laser-powered and increasingly offer 4K resolution, and many are now equipped with interactive capabilities to boost engagement in the classroom.

According to David Bishop, chief commercial officer at Pro AV Systems, office projectors are affordable alternatives to flat screen displays that also help end users better utilize space.

An immersive digital asset

Projectors have been and will always be essential technology for the classroom, meeting room or auditorium Bishop said.

Interactivity in projectors dominates the education market, both in K-12 and higher education, Bishop said.

“We do little in K-12 that’s not interactive unless it’s a large venue,” he said.

However, those large spaces also lend themselves to the increasingly bright and luminous projectors being made and installed in school auditoriums, gymnasiums and cafeterias.

Recent advancements in projection technology makes these displays very bright, sometimes as bright as 10,000 lumens.

Out of a corporate or educational setting, projection technology can also be used to create immersive displays in museums

Projectors for offices are incredibly valuable in the conference room due to the low amount of maintenance needed on the systems, said Scott Wright, president of Wisconsin-based Lifeline AV.

“The maintenance piece is a really big deal when it comes to conference rooms, churches and auditoriums,” he said.

Superior display size

According to Bishop, projectors can project images up to 100 inches in size at a cost generally under $3,000. However, digital displays can become much more expensive — sometimes more than $4,000 — as the size increases.

Projectors also give the end user more control over the space they’re allocating to their visual aid. TVs or video walls can take up a considerable amount of space, take days to install and cost your business more to install and maintain.

“Basically, this is the most cost-effective way to get a very large image,” Bishop said. “Projectors have come a long way.”

TVs and digital screens “just don’t get big enough,” Bishop said.

“The image size it really what it comes down to,” he said.

Projectors now aren’t as popular in corporate settings as conference rooms get smaller, but training rooms and any other large rooms will almost always be outfitted with a new projector, Bishop said.

“(Projectors) still hold onto that market if they need a bigger image in a corporate setting,” he said.

More bang for your buck

Against video walls or flat panel TVs, projectors for the office will always win out when it comes to cost, said Wright of Lifeline AV.

“If you’re doing a video wall, then you’re worrying about multiple panels, TVs and single panels,” he said. “On a projector, you’re worrying about less components.”

Installing a projector takes only a screen and the projector itself rather than up to a few dozen LED panels and the numerous circuits and hardware needed to install the large displays.

Bishop of Pro AV Systems cited a museum project in which Pro AV Systems used a series of projectors shot content that displayed across the hall on different objects. Another museum project included projections of dinosaurs walking down a hallway alongside visitors.

Accomplishing the same feat with a video wall could have been cost prohibitive.

“Basically, this is the most cost-effective way to get a very large image,” Bishop said. “Office projectors have come a long way.”

There are many laser projectors advantages over lamp-based machines, but we wanted to condense the buying logic down as much as possible for technology managers and IT departments to start with.

Rich McPherson, project manager for projectors at NEC Display Solutions, has a few thoughts on why you should consider laser projectors advantages over that of lamp-based options.

They’re fail-safe

Laser projectors come in a variety of models, which can include anywhere from 32 to 128 actual lasers in the design for most models.

Why is this important?

The reason is that when a lamp-based projector’s actual lamp fails, the machine will not display anything; whereas with laser-based projectors,  if one laser doesn’t work, a the machine will still operate.

“The most important piece of the pie is that you can still present something to your audience and get your point across,” McPherson says.

“Constant brightness”

McPherson introduced the concept of “constant brightness” in his explanation of laser projectors benefits. This concept refers to the amount of relative brightness needed in a room and the fact that laser options can scale down to that level easily and consistently, presenting economical efficiencies for the user.

So let’s say you’re the technology manager for a college campus, and one of your new classrooms has a couple of windows but isn’t altogether the brightest space on campus. This is a pretty standard environment for most school projectors, so your integrator will likely recommend a 5000-lumen projector.

Read Next: Here’s Why Solid State Projection Works Better for Classrooms

“If you need 5,000 lumens in a room, you’ll want to upscale to a 6,000 lumen product,” he says. “You want to do that because we can set it at 5,000 lumens and make sure the projector never changes brightness, making sure for you have the exact same image on the screen as the day you purchased the projector.”

McPherson stresses this “constant brightness” just can’t happen with a lamp projector.

Laser longevity is greater

In higher brightness ranges, traditional lamp projectors typically last about 2,000-4,000 hours per lamp, McPherson says. But with laser, 20,000-30,000 hours is fairly common.

“The longevity and usage factors far outweigh traditional lamps over time in terms of your return on investment,” he says.

But when you should consider lamp-based projectors instead?

  • if the room is consistently fairly dark (meaning the high-performance of a laser machine won’t likely be needed)
  • if the usage is rare or uncommon
  • if the budget is extremely tight

One of the perceived limitations of projection displays is that you have to have a lot of room to make a big image. But while “throw distance” is a factor, it’s not as big a factor as it used to be. Today’s short throw projectors can easily create images well over 100” diagonally.

All you need to do is choose the right projector.  Here’s a quick guide to doing just that.

[ Skip This: If you’re not keen on all the maths, the folks over at Projector People have a consolidated listing of all the short throw and ultra short throw projectors available – if you need help, their Projector Experts can assist you in your decision and they will do the math for you! ]

Guide to Buying Short Throw and Ultra Short Throw Projectors

The first technical think you will need to understand is “throw ratio.”

In laymen’s terms, you can imagine yourself with a flashlight in a dark room. When flashing the light at the wall from a close distance, you get a brighter and smaller circle. When you move back a few inches, you see the light covers a larger segment of the wall and dims slightly. The mathematical calculation of this effect is called “throw ratio.”

Technically speaking, “Throw ratio” is an equation that explains the distance from projector to screen compared to the screen size.  For example, a standard projector might have a 1.5:1 throw ratio. So, to get a 60-inch image; the projector would have to be 7.5 feet back from the screen.  Or, approximately 1.5” back for every 1” of screen. Any projector will have this ratio listed in the general specifications.

Currently there are four categories of throw ratio; standard, long, short, and ultra-short throw. We will have to rule out standard and long throw projectors and focus on either short or ultra short throw to get our big image in a small space. Here’s a chart to make this a little clearer.

Throw Ratio Chart

Projector Type Throw Ratio Distance From Screen Projected Diagonal Image
Regular Projector 1.5:1 7.5 feet 5 feet
Short Throw Projector 0.6:1 3 feet 5 feet
Ultra Short Throw Projector 0.37:1 1.4 feet 5 feet

So, with an ultra short throw projector, you can get a 5 foot (60”) image with your projector placed just 1.4 feet (18”ish) from your screen. That’s a very big image in a very tight space!

Common Uses for Short and Ultra Short Throw Lenses

Every projecting situation does not require a short throw projector. But there are some situations in which a short throw or ultra short projector is the perfect solution. Small learning spaces, conference rooms where detailed documents are shared, trade shows where a big image gets big attention, and in-home theaters with projector placement limitations, or where the home owners don’t want a big projector hanging from the ceiling.

  • Small conference rooms
  • Small classrooms (schools, churches, public engagement spaces)
  • Trade show booths
  • Tight home theater spaces

Short and Ultra Short Throw Projector Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Light not shining in presenters eyes during presentation
  • Less obstruction of image, distracting shadows
  • Can achieve a brighter large image from a lower lumen projector (effectively a 5000 lumen image from standard projector would require about 3000-3500 lumens to achieve with short throw)

Cons

  • No shadow puppets
  • Fans can be noisier in small places (look for lower dbs in specifications)
  • Less flexible placement options (may have no zoom)
  • Installation may require some offset, so less point and shoot than a standard projector

Can Short Throw Projection Offer Lower Cost Digital Signage?

Short throw projection is a growing segment of the projection market. New applications in digital signage have grown out of recent advances in short throw projection.

  • Over 90” it is likely to be more cost effective to use a projector vs a large screen LED display because of the weight of the display, installation requirements and overall cost of the unit.
  • New 4K ultra short throw units are on the horizon that can produce amazing images up to 140” diagonally, which would provide a cost-effective alternative to very expensive video walls.

If you’d like to know more about short throw as an alternative to LED displays, contact a Projector Expert to get more information.
