Chicago, Ill.-based Sharp NEC Display Solutions, prominent in the projector and display markets, introduced P627UL and the P547UL, the next generation in its popular P Series line of entry-level installation laser projectors. Per the company, the ultra-quiet P627UL and the P547UL projectors offer an increase in brightness with 6,200-lumens and 5,400-lumens, respectively. Thus, they allow for clearer images in areas with higher ambient light conditions. These projectors are also ideal for corporate board rooms, higher education classrooms, museums, houses of worship, retail and restaurant settings.

Due to Sharp/NEC’s patented sealed cooling system, the P627UL is the quietest operating projector in the 6,000-lumen LCD laser category. The cooling system seals the critical optical components to prevent dust. With this, the system no longer requires a filter or as much air flow for cooling. This then reduces the need for fans. Fewer fans produce much less noise. This nearly silent operation thus opens new opportunities in quiet applications.

Features of P627UL and P547UL Laser Projectors

“The new P627UL and the P547UL increase the brightness of the previous generation by 200 lumens; while running at a decibel level between a whisper and the rustling of leaves in a tree at a distance,” says Ryan Pitterle, senior product manager, projectors at Sharp NEC Display Solutions.

“Not only are they the quietest option in the entire category; but there are also no filters to change. And because they employ 20,000-hour lasers, there are no lamps to replace. This means there is no maintenance required during the product’s lifespan. Additionally, we’ve added manual horizontal and vertical lens shifts as well as HDBaseT input. [This] provides for more flexible installations. These are set-and-forget projectors that are designed to last,” says Pitterle.

With the HDBaseT input, installations are also easier, the company notes. The input also provides the ability to run a single cable long distances for video, audio and control. New, more flexible options for installation locations are also possible with a broad 1.6x zoom lens and manual vertical and horizontal lens shift. Now, installers can save time and money by avoiding obstructions or accounting for room design variations. Additionally, tilt-free and roll-free capabilities open new options for floor, ceiling and portrait projection.

The P627UL and the P547UL projectors are also compatible with ProAssist software support for network-based picture control and geometric correction capabilities. With this, they can create a clear image even if projected on a somewhat flat surface.

As with all Sharp/NEC’s laser projectors, the P627UL and the P547UL come with a 5-year warranty which includes InstaCare, Sharp/NEC’s replacement program. Also included is NaViSet Administrator 2 software, designed to provide remote administrative management and network-based control.

BenQ, the Costa Mesa, Calif.-based provider of visual display solutions, announced it’s latest smart meeting room projector, the EH620. Built on the Windows 11 platform, the projector enables meeting-goers to get started without a laptop or PC. To ensure the projector is no longer merely a device for displaying presentations but rather the room’s central hub, the EH620 is equipped with built-in Edge and Chrome web browsers, simple access to cloud storage platforms, casting and wireless presentation system options with four-way split windows for sharing multiple screens simultaneously, preloaded video conference options, built-in apps, and the BenQ Launcher utility to streamline workflows and launch meetings instantly.

“Our goal at BenQ is to create display solutions for meeting rooms that are as capable as any PC or laptop, giving meeting-goers the freedom to work right from the display itself and ensure not a second is wasted on troubleshooting or connecting devices,” says Bob Wudeck, senior director of business development at BenQ America Corp. “The BenQ EH620 smart projector is the culmination of that goal. It’s a powerhouse hub that’s simple to use and creates the collaborative meeting environments needed today.”

The EH620 Is the Room’s Hub

Featuring the built-in Windows 11 platform, the EH620 allows users to log in to the projector just as they would a Windows PC. There is no need to spend time learning how to operate a new device while collaborating. This reduces device clutter and distractions while increasing capabilities when connected to a wireless keyboard-mouse set and webcam. Users can start online meetings instantly.

The smart projector also features built-in Edge and Chrome browsers for easy web searches. Users can access their cloud account files on Google Drive, OneDrive and Microsoft Teams without using laptops. This effectively reduces meeting preparation time, with users getting everything done on one projector to present seamlessly. The BenQ-exclusive Launcher interface organizes apps into three groups, saving users time spent downloading, searching, or logging into apps. They just click the apps and start the meeting.

The EH620 Is Hybrid-Ready

The BenQ EH620 also supports all BYOD devices. Without installing any additional software or using Wi-Fi dongles, users can wirelessly present by either casting their devices directly to the projector with Miracast, AirPlay, or Google Cast (available in December 2022), or by utilizing BenQ’s InstaShare application. Up to four presenters can share their screens simultaneously with a four-way split-screen. Plus, the projector supports hybrid meetings. When running a videoconferencing app directly from the EH620 and wirelessly casting, both remote and in-room attendees can view the casted presentations.

The EH620 Is Video Conference-Native

Since the EH620 is preloaded with meeting apps including Google Meet, Skype for Business, and TeamViewer Meeting, users can launch and join videoconferences directly from the projector to free up personal devices from public use. The projector detects plug-and-play web cameras automatically and will switch to the optimal Vocal Audio Mode when the app launches.

The EH620 Is IT-Friendly

BenQ has identified three priorities for IT and ensured that the EH620 meets them: easy to install and set up, centrally managed, and robust in security. First, IT administrators and staff can bring their Windows PC experience directly to the EH620 projector. BenQ says is it bypasses complicated settings, especially with software installation and wireless setup.

For IT managers, the EH620’s RJ45 port enables integration with commonly used PJLink, Crestron, and AMX platforms, allowing them to access device information from a central location. In addition, the smart projector auto detects the firmware version and sends update availability notifications to ensure the firmware is current at all times.

Finally, for security, all wireless transmissions are protected by WPA2 AES 128-bit encryption and with Firmware Trusted Platform Module (fTPM), data is protected. Users — guests included — can cast their files to the EH620 without connecting to the local Wi-Fi network, thereby limiting opportunities for hackers.

Sony Electronics, the San Diego, Calif.-headquartered end-to-end solutions provider for the AV industry, announced the world’s smallest WUXGA 3 LCD laser projectors, the VPL-PHZ 61 and VPL-PHZ51. The latest Sony LCD projectors combine advanced operational capabilities with high brightness and flexible installation, making them a reliable option for a wide range of corporate, education, museum, entertainment and simulation applications, says Sony.

The VPL-PHZ61 and VPL-PHZ51 are compact and easy to install on ceilings in meeting rooms and classrooms with a +55% vertical shift, the widest in the fixed lens models. Both models boast high brightness – the VPL-PHZ61 at 6,400 lumens (7,000 lumen center) and the VPL-PHZ51 at 5,300 lumens (5,800 lumen center) – that project crystal clear images, even in a well-lit meeting room or lecture hall to enhance the collaboration and communication of users, says Sony.

Sony LCD Projector Features

With the incorporation of Sony’s Reality Creation real-time signal processing, mapping and analysis technology, the projectors produce crisp and clear pictures, for effective presentation and display. Both new models support 4K60P input for compatibility with 4K video sources. This is further amplified by Reality Creation’s ability to enhance the overall sharpness, resolution and quality of the imagery, regardless of whether it’s pictures, graphs or text.

Additionally, the projectors require no converter when being used with other 4K equipment to simultaneously project 4K content and support the “Deep Color” of HDMI and the HDCP2.3. The projectors’ Reality Text feature improves text-based presentation materials by providing clearer letters and lines with enhanced legibility.

The projectors also feature advanced Intelligent Settings, which offer optimization based on usage environment. The addition of customized Bright View functionality enables colors to accurately maintain their contrast and vivacity, even in brightly lit rooms.

The Ambiance feature automatically measures the room’s brightness using an ambient light sensor, and further calibrates the bright view, color gain and reality creation settings accordingly. Additionally, the new models use a new filter material which requires no filter cleaning for meeting room and classroom use.

“Many of our customers struggle to find display solutions that provide both exceptional high brightness and sophisticated features that can enhance their content and overall user experience,” says Rich Ventura, vice president of B2B, Sony Electronics. “We don’t want our customers to compromise on any of these asks, which is why we’ve built upon our existing legacy in developing feature-rich laser projectors, to provide compact and advanced projectors to the market. These projectors really are world-class in their technology, quality and design.”

Other features include:

  • Auto Light Output – By utilizing the ambient light sensor, the brightness of the projector is automatically controlled at night to save power consumption
  • Auto Power On – New Auto Power On feature that turns the projector on when video signal is sensed and Auto Input Select that automatically changes the input when video signal is sensed
  • Data cloning function – allows users to copy any settings on one projector to all subsequent projectors using a USB device
  • Maintenance – Makes it easier for users to remove the filter and to know when the filter needs cleaning with a new sensor.

The VPL-PHZ61 and VPL-PHZ51 are planned to be available later this fall in North America.

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library on the campus of North Carolina State University (NCSU) has been a resource for students and the surrounding community for decades. The library has reinvented itself over the years and completed its latest major renovation in 2021. Extron AV switching, distribution, and control were successfully deployed in the renovation to add  audio and video capabilities.

The Tech Challenges

The renovation involved extensive remodels to the structure, and many high-tech additions and upgrades, including cutting-edge audiovisual amenities. New AV-enabled spaces include the Innovation Studio, a venue to display virtual reality and other emerging technologies; the Visualization Studio, with immersive 360-degree projection; and the Data Experience Lab, a collaborative space for data science and analytics. Also included in the renovation are more group study rooms, more learning labs and more presentation spaces.

The in-house AV technology team at NCSU made a strategic decision to implement Extron AV switching, distribution, and control in the Hill Library partly because they were already using Extron’s GlobalViewer Enterprise software to manage their extensive deployment of Extron systems in many of the school’s other learning venues.

The Visualization & Innovation Studio

The Visualization Studio is an immersive theater-in-the-round experience, designed to showcase engaging content produced by faculty and students all across the campus. Eight projectors and twelve speakers deliver 360-degree video and enveloping Dolby Atmos surround sound for teaching and learning, research talks, special projects and events.

NCSU's Innovation Studio
The Innovation Studio.

The Visualization Studio relies on a 16×16 XTP II CrossPoint 1600 matrix switcher to select and distribute program content to eight projectors. XPA U 1002-70V and NetPA 1001-70V AT amplifiers deliver Atmos audio from analog and Dante sources to seven SM 28T surface mount speakers surrounding the audience and four SF 26PT pendant speakers suspended from the ceiling.

AV functions and lighting in the room are operated through a touchpanel interface on an iPad mini running the Extron Control App. Responding to the touchpanel selections, an IPCP Pro 555 control processor controls all AV system components, while an IPCP Pro 250 controls room lighting.

The Innovation Studio is a learning space that showcases work of students and faculty using a interactive projection experience, in which 4K laser projectors in the ceiling project images onto display tables and depth cameras sense people’s’ hand motions in 3D space above the tabletops as they interact with the projected images.

The effect is a touchscreen, but without the “touch.”  An XTP II CrossPoint 1600 matrix switcher handles AV switching to the projectors and to MPA 601 amplifiers driving speakers above the tables. Controlling all AV functions are IPCP Pro control processors and a variety of wall-mounted and tabletop TouchLink Pro touchpanels.

The Results

Those who walk through the D. H. Hill Jr. Library are benefitting from state-of-the-art audiovisual technology that holds the interest of even the latest generation of students accustomed to pervasive technology in every aspect of their lives.

Epson is now shipping its EB-PU 2100 and 2200 Pro Series interchangeable lens projectors for live event and large venue installations. The new lineup comes with 13,000, 16,000 and 20,000 lumen options. According to Epson, it also includes the world’s smallest and lightest 20,000 lumen projectors, the EB-PU2220B and EB-PU2120W. The California-based company adds that these projectors are 60% smaller and 50% lighter than its predecessors.

High Performance Projectors, Quick Installation

The new Pro Series models are packed with an advanced tool set and 3-chip 3LCD technology. It also feature WUXGA resolution with 4K Enhancement Technology to deliver crystal-clear, lifelike images. Additionally, a 20,000-hour virtually maintenance-free laser light source powers the models. The new line also boasts convenient features ideal for live events. This includes liquid cooling for enhanced longevity and reliability, 3G-SDI input and output to accommodate daisy-chaining and long cable runs.

Moreover, it has a mechanical shutter to help protect the projectors during laser light shows. The projectors also feature a hermetically sealed optical engine for high dust resistance and a filter-less cabinet for low-maintenance operation.

“Epson is thrilled to offer this new series of high-performance projectors. The engineering team listened and incorporated feedback from Epson customers around the world, leaving no aspect of the new design untouched,” says Gavin Downey, group product manager, large venue projectors, Epson America, Inc. “We’ve already received incredible excitement around the new models, particularly the tremendous size and weight reduction of the 20,000-lumen models, which can translate into real-world savings on delivery, labor and warehouse storage costs while providing world class 3-chip image quality.”

PixAlign Camera Features

Additionally, Epson’s new optional PixAlign camera attaches to the projector and adds another layer of convenience with access to powerful installation tools. These comprise projector stacking assist function, tiling assist for edge blends, color calibration and screen matching.

Also Read: Epson Unveils BrightLink Academy E-Courses for Educators

With the PixAlign camera, users also have access to the Simple Stacking function. Here, users can quickly stack two projectors using just the remote controller. The new projectors also pair with Epson’s extensive lens family, including an ultra short-throw .35 lens with a unique zero offset design. This adds flexibility during installation and when projecting in tight spaces. The University of Guelph in Ontario, which serves nearly 30,000 students and more than 1,200 faculty, is recognized not only for excellence in the arts and sciences but also for educating the whole person. It does that by seeking to turn knowledge into action and passion. One of the ways the University of Guelph acts on this education commitment is by offering a hybrid learning experience, complete with the latest technologies. From projectors, to PTZ cameras, to displays, the University employs an end-to-end Sony ecosystem to help support instructors’ needs while heightening student engagement.

Selecting the Sony Projectors and PTZ Cameras

Christopher Hewitt, manager of classroom technical infrastructure at the University was looking for versatile technology that would integrate with the campus’ existing systems. He says the interoperability of the product was paramount in his decision; in addition, the quality of the technology.

“Our product selection is primarily from tier-one vendors and vendors that have major brand influence. When we choose a new product, we try to rank it with others to ensure that it is compliant with our needs and then evaluate using factors such as price, serviceability, product reputation, quality and ease of use,” Hewitt says. “Typically, we look for products that are dependable and have companies that stand behind their product. It’s also important to have a sales representative that is local to our market, has a stakeholder relationship with our University and can bring experts to the table to talk about product development.”

Sony Technologies All Across Campus

The University of Guelph uses Sony’s technologies across its campus — from classrooms, to small seminar and lab rooms, to lecture theaters. The University has standardized on a full range of more than 150 of Sony’s laser projectors. The VPL-PHZ10 and VPL-PHZ50 are used in smaller spaces, whereas the VPL-FHZ90 and VPL-FHZ70 are used in larger rooms, with each room typically housing two projectors.

Hewitt notes, “We’ve been using Sony’s projectors exclusively since 2015. When we were looking to make an upgrade, we conducted our own shoot-out testing the Sony projectors against other competitors and we’re confident that the Sony lineup outperformed others. Paired with the exceptional reliability that Sony provides, the models offer us a competitive advantage. In addition, the great sales incentive allowed us to maximize our renewal funding, enabling us to purchase units for more classrooms.”

The University of Guelph depends on the durability and predictability of Sony’s projectors. Hewitt explains, “To have a product that I know lasts about eight or nine years helps me plan for the future and minimize expenditures. Sony released an ECO mode that has drastically extended the life of the projectors. This has saved me over 40% of my budget in projectors over the years and has reduced the amount that I procure. The tight base funding for replacing projectors has meant I am able to stretch these limited dollars into other products and do not have to worry about the lifecycle of these projectors.”

In addition, the University of Guelph has deployed more than 60 of Sony’s PTZ cameras. This includes the SRG-X120 HD camera with zoom capabilities and an SDI output, which is used in rooms where lectures and tutorials are captured. Although Sony was not the initial first choice, the cameras proved to be the right choice for the school.

Hewitt says, “When it came time to choose new cameras, we first went with a competitor’s product and although it was implemented by our team, the image quality was not quite there. Instead, we adopted Sony’s SRG series, which successfully replaced our previous units. The attractive Sony devices offered better quality at the same price point while providing us with great support and a product that prioritized image quality. We were quite impressed with the cameras and were pleased that the stock levels didn’t falter during the pandemic.”

The Benefits of the Sony System

As the school began programming its classes with a hybrid mindset, technology has played an even more important role in providing interactivity and collaboration, in-person and remotely.

“We have in-person lectures that are live streamed using a web conference environment that is platform agnostic. Coupled with our standard of being a BYOD environment, it means with little configuration, we are able to accommodate anyone’s laptop into the classroom and successfully have it joined to the conference using Sony’s cameras to capture the audience and lecturer’s class,” describes Hewitt.

He continues, “With regards to the technology that we put in place over the pandemic, the Sony cameras have given the ability to live conference from the classroom to students and other faculty members abroad resulting in increased engagement, web conference capability and the ability to have a hybrid lecture that is two-way. It allows participants to not only view the classroom but participate interactively.”

Students, Faculty Members Notice the Difference

The technology in place is also making an impact on its beneficiaries. Hewitt explains, “Students and faculty members alike have noticed a difference in the quality of the images displayed on-screen. Having a great image is paramount to the student experience, with rich colors, true blacks and deeper contrast – especially when placed in a class where color and experience matter. Our College of Arts have depended upon Sony’s projectors through the years and are very fond of the experience they deliver.”

The final reason Hewitt cites for aligning with Sony was their overall partnership. From progressive service and support to creative problem solving, Hewitt adds, Sony went above and beyond. Sony helped the University capitalize on the latest education trends to create a more dynamic learning experience for students.

Projector manufacturer Epson has announced the availability of six new laser projector displays, including two interactive BrightLink models and four non-interactive PowerLite ultra short-throw models.

The PowerLite 755F and 750F, designed to help business owners and educators transform spaces, are available now, while the BrightLink 735Fi, 725Wi and PowerLite 725W and 720 designed for videoconferencing and meeting rooms will be available starting Nov. 23, according to the company’s press release.

In a statement, Mark Roslon, director of product marketing at Epson, said the new projectors aim to solve the problems that teachers and business owners are facing as they adapt new technologies for education, collaboration and communication.

“As we move toward a post-pandemic future, larger, bolder displays are imperative in the classroom and meeting room to address the need for social distancing and create an engaging experience for in-person and remote participants,” Roslon said. “Epson’s laser projectors represent the latest in display technology and produce large, bright visuals at more affordable costs compared to flat panels. They also offer a lot of flexibility in installation while delivering informative and engaging displays that are not bound by a physical frame.”

According to Epson, the BrightLink 725Wi offers 100-inches of interactive space with 16:10 images, and the BrightLink 735Fi offers ultra-wide 110-inch, 16:6 images.
BrightLink models include built-in wireless connectivity, automatic image alignment and pen calibration for easy installation as well as split-screen and side-by-side viewing from multiple sources. This allows educators to present multiple streams and whiteboard displays for enhanced content sharing.

The new BrightLink projectors also support wireless interactivity via Micracast and wireless displays using Epson iProjection software to connect laptops to individual student devices, helping to limit touching the board.

Meanwhile, the PowerLite 725 and 720 ultra short-throw laser displays go well with pre-installed interactive whiteboards or in classrooms where interactivity is not needed. They’re designed to deliver high-quality images with convenient wireless connectivity, instant on activation and a 20,000-hour laser light source with no lamps.

The PowerLite 755F and 750F can be used for digital signage by combining the projection features, connectivity and user-friendly software.

“Encouraging creativity, the new projectors allow users to easily shift content from impromptu social distance messaging to customized product details that inform customers of available inventory, promotions and more, all while reducing physical interaction,” the company’s press release said.

The PowerLite models can be used in small spaces and offer 360-degree placement and a full stack of connectivity options with 5GHz wireless. Users can also wirelessly display and change content using Miracast via Epson’s iPropjection app.

They also come with Epson’s free content management software and the Epson Creative Content Projection app.
