Host Jonathan Blackwood speaks with MJ Shoer about VoIP, switching from a traditional phone system to VoIP service, writing a VoIP RFP, and more.
In this episode of MyTechDecisions Podcast, host Jonathan Blackwood speaks with MJ Shoer, Director of Client Engagement and vCIO at OnePath.
In addition to his role at OnePath, MJ Shoer writes a blog about IT issues impacting small and mid-size enterprises. He has held several technology and management positions with a variety of tech companies including Internet & Telephone, LLC, and Blue Fin Systems, the first dial-up ISP in the Seacoast New Hampshire region. MJ is an accomplished writer, publishing his first book, Hassle-Free Computer Support, in 2006. His latest book, The Tech Multiplier, reached best seller status in the technology category on Amazon in 2013.
MJ knows what he’s talking about with IT, and has significant experience with internet systems and VoIP in general. In our interview we discuss how companies can change to or bolster a VoIP system.
VoIP is a technology that, if commissioned and implemented correctly, can both save money and improve processes for an organization. It’s not just a telephony technology, it serves as a communications suite that can essentially turn the entire connected planet into a company’s office. Users can utilize the same phone number and system, and can be reached on any connected device at any time with the same credentials. It clears up confusion and keeps remote employees easily accessible.
More than that, though, VoIP can assume the responsibility of an entire unified communications suite. By bundling services like videoconferencing into a VoIP service, you’re placing all of you communications under the same contract and can experience significant savings. Not to mention gain functionality between systems that can be difficult when using multiple vendors and providers.
MJ gives a ton of great advice about what to look for in a VoIP service depending on your organizational needs. He explains how to write those needs into an RFP so your provider will bring you what you want, not push products and services on you. Finally, he goes in depth into the carry-over process – offering alternate strategies for switching from legacy systems to VoIP services for small and large projects.
Give the interview a listen and think about how you could upgrade to VoIP or expand VoIP to cut costs and streamline employee efforts.
