Last week, the University of Central Florida (UCF) announced that it suffered a data breach In January 2016.
According to the university, after an investigation, it appears that the “intrusion into the university’s computer network resulted in unauthorized access to certain information for two groups,” which totals to around 63,000 current and former UCF students, staff and faculty members.
One group includes current student athletes, former athletes who played for the university in 2014-2015, and some sports managers.
The second group consists of current and former employees in Other Personal Services, which includes undergraduate student employees, graduate assistants and housing resident assistants.
The statement from UCF also said that the information that was breached from student athletes and managers includes first and last names, social security numbers, student ID numbers, if the students were “walk-ons” or recruited, and the number of credit hours taken/in progress.
For the group of employees, the information breached included first and last names, social security numbers and UCF-issued employee ID numbers.
The investigation also reports that grades, credit card information, financial records and medical records were “not involved.”
Since the data breach was discovered, the university is taking steps to ensure future cyber-attacks are prevented by:
• Enhancing user account and password security
• Expanding campus-wide information security and information training
• Conducting a review of current online systems and protocols
UCF has established a call center for those who have questions about the breach.
