Google is announcing new generative AI tools through Google Cloud, Maker Suite and Google Workspace designed to help developers, businesses and users leverage the emerging technology to help automate tasks and make them more efficient.
The new generative AI features come as ChatGPT continues to make headlines and as Microsoft rolls out integrations throughout its product portfolio. The move signals Google’s desire to compete with Microsoft and ChatGPT by releasing its own generative AI models and integrations it has been developing.
Google’s new generative AI features in Workspace essentially amount to a writing assistant that will automatically generate a draft in Gmail and Google Docs when a user types a topic they want to write about. For example, managers onboarding new employees can ask the AI assistant to write a draft email for them, which can be expanded upon or abbreviated. The tone can also be adjusted to be more playful or professional, Google says.
Google is also introducing PaLM API, which the company says allows developers to build on top of its language models. An efficient model is available now, and others will be added later. The API comes with an intuitive tool called MakerSuite designed to help developers quickly prototype ideas. Over time, Google will offer capabilities such as prompt engineering, synthetic data generation and custom-model tuning. Select developers can access the PaLM API and MakerSuite in private preview tool.
In Google Cloud, the company is bringing generative AI capabilities to help developers and organizations access enterprise-level safety, security, privacy, as well as integrations with existing Google Cloud solutions.
In Vertex Ai, Google is providing foundation models for generating text and images. Over time, Google will also generative AI capabilities for audio and video. Google Cloud customers can leverage these models to create and modify prompts, fine tune them with their own data and deploy applications that leverage those capabilities.
Also in Google Cloud is a new generative AI App Builder designed for organizations that want to build their own AI-powered chat interfaces and digital assistants. The tool connects conversational AI flows with out-of-the-box search experiences and foundation models.
Google is also expanding its AI ecosystem and specialized program for technology partners, AI-focused software providers and startups, the company says.
So far, these features are only available to a set of trusted testers, according to Google. The company invited external and internal testers to test these new experiences, a strategy it says is necessary to develop the emerging technology responsibly.
In a blog announcing these new features, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian says the company will have even more announcements in the coming weeks and months.
“We’re so excited by the potential of generative AI, and the opportunities it will unlock — from helping people express themselves creatively, to helping developers build brand new types of applications, to transforming how businesses and governments engage their customers and constituents,” Kurian says.
