Microsoft has started rolling out Tasks in Teams to Microsoft 365 customers, the company announced.
The rollout officially began Tuesday to a small group of desktop users, and the rollout will continue through September. The company first announced the new feature during last year’s Ignite event.
In a Tuesday blog post, the company called Tasks in Teams a coherent task management experience within Teams, which many organizations are adopting as their hub for teamwork in the remote work environment of the new normal.
Tasks in Teams brings together Microsoft Planner and Microsoft To Do, giving users one place to manage team plans and individual tasks, according to Microsoft.
According to Microsoft, Tasks in Teams comes as an app that shows both Planner and To Do tasks, and as a tab added to individual Teams channels that only shows Planner tasks.
To get the new Tasks in Teams app when it’s available, click the ellipses in the Teams siderail to the left and select “Planner.” That will be the name of the app as the feature rolls out. It will then change to Tasks by Planer and To Do before it is officially changed to just Tasks.

Tasks will sync with both To Do and Planner, so items added to Tasks are replicated in both, and vice versa, according to Microsoft’s original announcement blog.
Outlook and Office documents and additional task endpoints will connect with Tasks as well.
“Ultimately, our goal is to bring your tasks to Tasks in Teams no matter where you first create them,” Microsoft said in a blog.
Since the Ignite announcement, the company made some additions to the feature:
- Task publishing – Designed for companies with a large firstline workforce spread out over a large geographic area, task publishing allows users to create tasks at the corporate level and push them to targeted locations of their workforce.
- List view: Another option for visually managing tasks aside from boards, charts, and schedule views from Planner.
- Edit multiple tasks at once: With List view, users can bulk edit capabilities and select multiple tasks to make the same edits simultaneously.
- APIs and Power Automate: Users can use Graph API and Power Automate integrators for Planner and To Do to surface tasks created in other apps in Tasks in Teams.
