So, you’ve got your shiny new devices, your teachers are trained, your network is ready, and it’s time to go 1:1. You’re confident you’ve thought of everything from mobile device management to learning software and more. What could go wrong?
Alot—if you haven’t considered power needs. According to Cindy Weinschreider, director of marketing Communications, Bretford Manufacturing Inc., one of the biggest challenges with mobile learning is keeping the devices charged. Since most schools were built long before 1:1 and BYOD learning environments were common, the buildings don’t have enough outlets to allow educators to charge a classroom full of devices.
“Tables with built-in power and other power-enabled furniture is necessary to prevent battery drain, which in turn, interrupts teaching and learning,” Weinschreider says.
Power isn’t a sexy topic. It’s a lot more fun to think about how you’re going to use devices or which apps or software you want to download, but, power is essential. If students are allowed to bring their devices home you want to think they’ll charge them, but the reality of the situation is that won’t always happen. That’s why it’s important schools investigate additional power options like charging carts or power enabled furniture, cases and more.
