Technology develops and changes incredibly quickly, and nothing illustrates that better than the rise of artificial intelligence, also known as AI.
AI is an advanced computer software that manifests some kind of man-made intelligence. It works in a similar way to our brains, in that it can learn, adapt, and even think. However, in order for it to work, programmers must simplify human behaviour so it can be applied to a computer, which means taking away the more emotional, creative parts and focusing on logic.
There are two types of AI: narrow and general. Narrow AI has seen more progress and you’re probably more familiar with it — it’s used in programmes like Siri and Alexa. Narrow AI can carry out specific activities, but nothing beyond that.
General AI, on the other hand, can adapt to different tasks and unfamiliar situations. It’s not quite a part of everyday life yet, although new discoveries are being made all the time. General AI uses its previous experience to inform its responses to new events, much like we do all the time.
One thing is certain — artificial intelligence isn’t going away any time soon. New infographic Rise of the Machines helps to break down its history, the arguments for and against, and what we can expect in future.
